The 105mm f/2.8G ED IF AF-S VR Micro Nikkor Review

J. Ramon Palacios (jrp)

The 105mm f/2.8D AF Micro Nikkor lens has long been a classic choice for 35mm film macro, close-up and even portrait photography. On DX format (APS-C) digital cameras it further expanded its preference among Nikonians. In February 2006, Nikon announced its engineers had further enhanced it. This announcement was just in time for the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) International Show. We had an opportunity to try it at the show in Orlando, Florida. "Further enhanced" turned out to be quite an understatement. Read more...

This lens, released along with the Nikon F100 35mm film camera, has become a very popular companion of the N80/F80. "The 28-105 has been like my Swiss Army Knife of lenses" is the typical enthusiastic kind of comment from many Nikonians, whether shooting film or digital SLRs. Read more...

Nikkor AF 20/2.8D Review

Bo Stahlbrandt (bgs)

The 20mm/2.8D AF lens is interesting, whether on 35mm film or on FX digital format. With it you can go out taking landscape shots without getting fish-eyed while still getting more or less the whole view at 94 degrees. You can also use it for "environmental portraits", having a humble object somewhere in the middle of the frame and all of the interesting surroundings too. Read more...

General information about Nikkor macro lenses

Nikon's macro lenses have always had a special appeal to me and to many other photographers. These specialized lenses, of superior optics, combined with close focusing capabilities to actual size ratios, or even larger ratios with extension devices such as a bellows or extension tubes, can go far and beyond the call of duty. Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Review

Mike Hagen (Mike_Hagen)

Nikon’s newest super zoom, the 28-300mm has big shoes to fill considering Nikon’s history for creating some of the sharpest lenses in the world. Nikon has been making great zoom lenses for many years and created a cult-like following with their famous DX 18-200mm f3.5 – f5.6. The lure of a super zoom is that you can buy just one lens for travel and you won’t need to carry along a bag full of gear. Read more...

Perspective from two lenses: 35mm and 85mm

Al Smith (sitney)

At one thread, a member asking the question as to "which lens to get next?" was offered many opinions. One possible answer to this recurrent question was a lens pairing with lenses a bit wider and narrower than a 50mm lens. The 35mm and 85mm combination came up as a good pair to start with. This article compares how these two lenses render the same object. Read more...

Nikkor 70-210mm f4-5.6 vs. Nikkor 75-240mm f4.5-5.6 Review

Wayne Lorimer (wjlorimer)

Having recently (late 2009) purchase a D300 with which to shoot Weddings and Portraiture, my thoughts immediately turned to lenses. I have the 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 'kit' lens as my main coverage lens (and what a fantastic lens it is for the price), but wanted to be able to get closer at times to really isolate the subject from the background. Using non-CPU lenses on your pro Nikon camera

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

When you’ve spent a lot of time with a certain camera or lens, you sort of develop a relationship with it. You become familiar with its sharpness, field-of-view, and contrast, and know when to use it for taking the best images. But, over time, technology changes, and camera bodies have become more intelligent. Since your old favorite lenses can’t electronically communicate with the new bodies, they might have been sadly relegated to the bag in the back of the closet. Read more...

Great value in used Nikkors

Rick Walker (walkerr)

For those wishing to save a little money by purchasing used Nikkor lenses, well now is as good as ever to buy! The introduction of newer Autofocus (AF) designs has driven down the price of their predecessors, creating remarkable value in some cases. Even those using AF bodies can find some great bargains out there in lenses that are one or two generations back. Rick Walker shares his thoughts on what he perceives to be some of the better values out there. Read more...

Non-CPU lenses on your Nikon DSLR

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

Lenses are some of the most desirable and expensive parts of our Nikon photography addictions. All of us have our eye on at least one or two more Nikkors. Wisely, Nikon has not changed their F-Mount lens attachment bayonet for a very long time. That means probably your Nikon DSLR can mount, not only the newest AF-S Nikkors and aftermarket lenses, but also most of the older Manual Focus (MF) lenses from just a few years ago. Read more...

The 85mm f/2.8D PC Micro Nikkor Review

Roger Engle (ziggy7)

Perspective control objectives are commonly associated with architectural photography. However, their capacity to regulate the distribution of depth of field make them susceptible of consideration by macro photographers, discipline where DOF is always a limiting factor. The 85mm f/2.8D PC Micro Nikkor is tried here from the perspective of the nature photographer, not only to learn about its quality but to also understand its functionalities as applied to this specialty. All I can say is "All-in-one" zooms have come a LONG way. I am quite impressed with this little lens. I have to call this a "consumer" lens, but that's NOT because of the image quality. I'm still amazed at the results that can be gotten from this very compact, wide-range lens. Read more...

Nikkors Shootout at 70mm

J. Ramon Palacios (jrp)

Very pleasing portrait perspectives can be accomplished starting at 70mm. On APS-C DX format, this focal length is equivalent to 105mm, so the perspective further improves. Two zoom lenses providing this focal length, qualify as "pro" Nikkors as they are both "fast" -constant f/2.8 aperture- quite free of aberrations and very well built. Read more...
