In episode #105 of the Image Doctors podcast, Rick and Jason interview Gerhard Wolff of LaserSoft Imaging, makers of SilverFast software (www.silverfast.com).
The SilverFast suite of software includes sophisticated tools for scanning film with a wide variety of scanners, including Nikon models. Gerhard discusses methods for optimizing the quality of scans and some of the workflow alternatives offered in today's tools. Rick discusses his experiences using SilverFast AI Studio and SilverFast HDR Studio with the Nikon 9000 and 4000 Coolscans based on tips he received from Gerhard.
Of particular interest is the option to scan to a unique 64-bit HDRi tiff format, which allows your detailed edits, including dust and dirt removal, to be deferred until later and then processed via SilverFast HDR. This resembles something akin to a raw workflow with digital images and can speed up the slide or negative workflow, while also creating options to easily modify easily at a later date. Gerhard and the Doctors also discuss the use of Multi-Exposure to increase the dynamic range of a scan, techniques for minimizing grain, and the use of a calibrated target for ensuring accurate colors in the scanned image.
Gerhard also talks about the current state of scanner technology, and the Plustek line of scanners in particular. The SilverFast products will be of particular interest to owners of Nikon scanners, as they are robust alternatives to Nikonscan softwarethat are actively supported and work on the newest Windows and Mac operating systems.
