Understanding ISO & Noise Reduction Settings

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

One thing that makes a digital camera exciting is the fact that one can change the “sensitivity” of the image capturing sensor at any time, from one frame to the next. A film user must carry rolls of film with different ISO numbers and waste film when it’s necessary to change the ISO before the end of a roll. A digital camera can instead use AUTO ISO for automatic sensitivity adjustments, or one can adjust the camera manually for a different ISO on each shot. Read more...

Think Tank Photo Airport Acceleration V2.0 Backpack Review

Thomas Berg (twberg)

About a year ago I decided to join a group of photo enthusiasts for a photographic safari in Namibia (which was performed just recently). I had all the photographic equipment available but no suitable bag compatible with modern air traffic regulations. My bag choices were either too small or way too bulky and I did not want to compromise my equipment selection. So I started to look around to see what was on the market. Read more...

Photographer's Guide to Resolution and Print Size

J. Ramon Palacios (jrp)

You are now the proud owner of both a film scanner or a digital camera and an inkjet printer. But may have wondered what is the best resolution -or pixel density- of a digitized image to allow for the production of a good print in a given size. Read more...

Nikon D2X - Exposure Bracketing

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

With digital photography you can see the results of your exposures right away. But, since the image viewing LCD is backlit, your images may appear a bit brighter than they really are. You can use the histogram to make sure your exposures are accurate, or you can be even safer with exposure bracketing. Read more...

Neutral Density & Color Graduated Filters

J. Ramon Palacios (jrp)

Quite often the correct exposure for a background in a scene is not the best one for the foreground or viceversa. The most common problem is that the bright sky is reproduced perfectly while the landscape is underexposed; in fact pitch black most of the times. These are the occasions where the color and neutral density (ND) graduated (grad) filters can make the difference between a bad image, a good image and a better one. Read more...

Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 Model 272E Lens Review

Paul Fisher (Paul_Fisher)

Since 1979, Tamron has produced 90mm macro lenses whose optical quality has rivaled the extraordinary Micro-Nikkors. Some photographers claim to have preferred the Tamron over the Nikkor because of its superior handling of out-of-focus areas ("Bokeh"). More recently, Tamron have introduced a range of “digitally integrated” Di lenses. Read more...

Enlarging Digital Images for Publication

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

Is it possible to take the output from a six-megapixel digital SLR camera and enlarge it until it meets the file-size and quality standards of publishers for digital image submission? This question is being discussed all over the Internet. A large number of people are using cameras in the six-megapixel range, and would like to sell their images to stock agencies, or submit them to magazines for publication. Read more...

Shooting an air show with your Nikon DSLR

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

With the powerful, fast, and flexible Multi-CAM 2000 autofocus module found in the Nikon D2x/D2Hs cameras, air shows are quite popular as subjects. Like shooting almost any high speed subject, a fast camera/lens combo is required. Don't we all enjoy airplanes and wish that we could fly like the birds? For many of us, photographing high speed planes is a great thrill, and puts us close to the aviation we love. Read more...

The 85mm f/2.8D PC Micro Nikkor Review

Roger Engle (ziggy7)

Perspective control objectives are commonly associated with architectural photography. However, their capacity to regulate the distribution of depth of field make them susceptible of consideration by macro photographers, discipline where DOF is always a limiting factor. The 85mm f/2.8D PC Micro Nikkor is tried here from the perspective of the nature photographer, not only to learn about its quality but to also understand its functionalities as applied to this specialty. What’s the Best ISO Setting? Native, Pushed or Auto?

User

The ability to dial in ISO sensitivities in the five- to six-figure range in 1/3-stop increments is pretty heady stuff. With the exception of some of the highest ISO ratings, the image quality of the resulting imagery remains surprisingly decent and is equal to or better than the image quality of the fastest film stocks, which speed-wise were nowhere near the ISO sensitivity levels we can squeeze out of our (H)DSLRs. Tamron SP AF60mm F2.0 Di II LD [IF] Macro Review

Thomas Berg (twberg)

This review of the Tamron 60mm f/2 Macro/Portrait lens for Nikon DX cameras is completely subjective and concentrates on practical aspects such as usability,  bokeh and field‐of‐view characteristics. It concentrates on the "hands‐on" aspect instead of the intricate performance data used by authors who emphasize resolution figures and lab‐style technical aspects determined through the use of equipment designed to gauge, measure and analyze lens performance. Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX HSM Review

Jason Odell (DrJay32)

I'll admit, spending twice as much as my F5 for a lens was an intimidating feeling. Talk about credit card anxiety! But “big glass” doesn’t come cheaply, and I really wanted to get closer to wildlife, especially small birds. I carefully did my homework to decide on a lens that would get the job done, would be of professional caliber, and wouldn’t completely bankrupt me. When the dust settled, I got the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX HSM. Read more...

FX "Full-Frame" vs. DX Digital Sensor Size

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell)

The 35mm "Full-Frame" vs. DX size digital sensor controversy is caused by a general lack of "digital sensor" knowledge on the part of many users, and strong marketing propaganda on the part of some sellers. Many camera users haven't investigated the design of lenses and how light must fall on a digital sensor, compared to film. Read more...
