Photographing Iceland - Part 3: Day 2 thru day 4

This is the third part of a six part series on Photographing Iceland -- The next part will be published next week.

We begin at 7 am in vain hope of a sunrise, planning on a return to Kirkjufell after a buffet breakfast in our hotel.  The usual regional culinary peculiarities are present.  My experience is that you can more or less guess where you are in Europe by looking at breakfast.  Aside from obvious Scandinavian telltales like the presence of 5 varieties of pickled herring, the local idiosyncrasy appears to be a fondness for baked beans and small smoked cocktail sausages in the morning.  (NB, not an advisable breakfast choice if you are going to be in a bus with 14 other people for the better part of a day.)

We reach Kirkjufell and the weather is minimally improved.  It is no longer raining, but the cloud deck has further lowered since the previous day, with Kirkjufell’s summit moving in and out of clouds.  Feeling that the lighting conditions are little changed from the previous afternoon, I do not have any interest in repeating yesterday’s shots.  I opt to move away from the falls and start walking around a large lagoon to the southeast of the mountain. This proves to be a rewarding choice, as there are a number of interesting shots, using the mostly frozen lagoon and shore as foreground and as a reflecting “pool."

This turns out to be a most fortuitous decision, as the surface of the lagoon is very interesting visually, with areas that are fully frozen and have standing water on them from the recent thaw.  It makes for rather unusual reflections and visual textures.  In general, I am much happier with these images than the ones closer to Kirkjufellfoss.

These are some of the same places I visited last year during the summer. The black church was the site of a small wedding when we were there. The wedding party was in the dining room when we ate dinner. Your articles really make me yearn to return. One thing I especially enjoyed was the smoked salmon at each breakfast buffet. And the best butter ever. I am really enjoying your article. Thanks
