Editors Note =========================================================== Dear all, A lot has happened in the community within the last months. Once more, we have many things to be thankful for. One of them is your interest in our community, Nikonians, the Friendly Nikon Users Community. The response of Nikonians from all parts of the globe has been overwhelming. Today we have over 11,500 members from 97 nations. A great mix of professionals and amateurs continues to sign up and strengthen the now vast wealth of knowledge and experience about the equipment of our choice and photography in general. We are now used as a reference all over the net. We are proud of it; understanding the responsibility for keeping up the high standard in posts, we thank you all for helping out in that regard. The team has grown over the last months too, and the Nikonian Ladies forum is now taken care of by Carolyn Patin-Jones (cpatinjone). To check out the latest info on the team, have a peek at http://www.nikonians.org/html/about/nikonians_team.html Many Nikonians remember the excellent photographer and Nikonian Galen Rowell, who sadly passed away in August this year. It was not only a great loss to the Nikonians community, but to the global photography world. http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=631&forum=DCForumID38&viewmode=threaded Just before we delivered this long overdue edition, we returned from the 2nd Nikonians Photo Adventure, this time at the Moab desert in Utah, in the USA. The number of attendees tripled and as far as we now it was for all a most enjoyable experience. Our only regret was not having had the time to chat long with each one there. Our thanks to Lori (cactusbabe) and BJ Nicholls (bjnicholls) who were our scouts, guides, organizers and hosts. We could not have made it without them. To commemorate the Moab trip, a CD-ROM is in production and should be ready for sale before the holidays. By purchasing this CD-ROM you not only will enjoy very nice photographs, short stories, and QuickTime movies, but you also help to support the operation of our community. More information here: http://www.nikonians.org/html/shop/cdrom-moab-2002.html End of September, a gang of Nikonians met up at the Photokina, 250,000 sq. m (2.7mio sq ft) and 14 exhibition halls cramped with pure photo and imaging lust. Now on December 7th at 10:00 AM, A group of Nikonians are meeting up at Piccadilly Circus, London, for a weekend of good shooting and getting to know one another. http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID30/246.html Once again, we sincerely thank you for your enthusiasm, interest, and ongoing support. We are very happy to have you. Long live Nikonians! And remember - Share your passion! Bo Stahlbrandt (bo@nikonians.org) / Germany José Ramón Palacios (jrp@nikonians.org) / Mexico 06-DEC-2002 2. New Forums =========================================================== A number of new, interesting forums are up and running, taken care of by ambitious Nikonians. The new forums are: "The Clubs & Concert Forum" The place for all of you who like the smoky close-in of the club shot, the wide angle of the opera or just a nice long tele, cropping the face of the star at the latest Rock im Palast. http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID77&conf=DCConfID5 The long requested "F4 Users Group" taken care of by Alan Schroeder (rutherfordphoto) http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID78&conf=DCConfID3 "The Nikon Based Digital Hybrid Camera Forum", the Mecca for Fuji S2 users and the like, being in the "old hands" of Alan Clifton (AlanC) and Darrell Young (darrellyoung) http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID75&conf=DCConfID3 One of the interesting topics in this forum is on BJ's Fuji S2 http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID75/29.html 3. Bookshelves and Stores =========================================================== We made a move into Amazon.com to take advantage of 30% discount on most of the 200 books in our bookshelves, now revised and expanded. In the interest of most, we have made arrangements for Nikonians to be served by Amazon not only in the USA but also North, Central and South America, including Canada, plus in England and Ireland, and Germany. Furthermore, as associate affiliates to them all, items purchased at any of their stores (books, apparel, toys, electronics, etc.) will earn your community a small fee. Get ready for the Holidays! Visit the Bookshelves and stores here: http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/bookshelves/index.html 4. Magazines =========================================================== We can currently offer the best photo magazines published in the USA at the best possible prices for Nikonians with a USA address. We are in search of wholesalers to make this service available to most Nikonians with addresses elsewhere. Visit the Magazine Racks: http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/magazines/index.html 5. Guides and How To's =========================================================== We are in the process of expanding the "Guides and How To's" short articles. This should reduce the need for repeated questions and referencing outside of the community. Already a section on filters has been added and a couple of pieces are available: Get to know the basic filter systems http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/guides/what-filter-system/what-filter-system_1.html UV, Haze and Skylight filters http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/guides/uv_haze_skylight/uv_haze_skylight_filters1.html Diffusion - Softening filters http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/guides/diffusion_softening/diffusion-softening_filters1.html The rest in the series is forthcoming. 6. Young is available here: http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/body/f80/f80_1.html And of course, the Swiss Army Knife of lenses the AF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D ED IF Zoom Nikkor http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/nikkor/af/28-105/28-105_1.html 7. New Moderators =========================================================== To maintain both the quality of the content and observance to our Terms Of Use, the role of our moderators is most important and has been performed at highly professional standards. We thank you all for contributing your talent, expertise, and moderate character to the community. We should be very proud of what has been accomplished to date. So we take this opportunity to welcome our new moderators: Darrell R. Young, moderating the Assignments, Nikon based Hybrid digital cameras and also helping out at the D1/D100 forum; Carolyn Patin-Jones, now in charge of the female only Nikonian Ladies Forum; Allan Schroeder, moderator for the new F4 Users Group; Chris Myers, moderating the Neg Film, Slide Film and Literature Reviews forums. Best of luck, we hope you enjoy it and thanks a lot! 8. New Nikonians Assignments =========================================================== There are many interesting online assignments at Nikonians. Assignment #18 When a shadow is the subject of your image, the shape really counts! A baby looking out a window. A naked tree between you and a winter sunset. Bright backgrounds and imagination! The shape becomes the subject. Show us your version of... The Silhouette... http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=68&forum=DCForumID29&viewmode=threaded Assignment #17 The fluorescents buzzing, laughter, muted sounds of music, people talking, warm darkness, and colorful light. Do you feel it? Can you see it? Has your Nikon captured the heat of the night? What is the color of the dark? The nightlife http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=67&forum=DCForumID29&viewmode=threaded Assignment #16 You have been hired to take the ultimate cover shot. This one will make you world famous. It's got to be sharp, well exposed, interesting, and a vertical frame. The subject doesn't matter, just make it a vertical shot, and make it magazine cover quality. In this one, sharpness and exposure makes a difference. A magazine editor will accept no less than top quality. We are the editors! Show us your magazine cover shot! http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=65&forum=DCForumID29&viewmode=threaded 9. Shootout at 70 =========================================================== Very pleasing portrait perspectives can be accomplished starting at 70mm. Two zoom lenses providing this focal length, qualify as "pro" Nikkors as they are both "fast" - constant f/2.8 aperture - quite free of aberrations and very well built. They are the 28-70mm f/2.8D ED IF AF-S and the more modest 35-70mm f/2.8D AF. Check out this Nikonians shootout http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/nikkor/af/70mm_shootout 12. Photography Career? =========================================================== Several Nikonians have turned pro during the existence of the community. Do you think we should devote a forum explicitedly for photography career discussions? Place your vote: http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID4/285.html 13.
