February Winner of Nikonians Monthly Photo Contest 1. Editors Note =========================================================== A brand new SLR digital camera is expected to hit the market in the summer. The D100. Yes, there are the D1X and D1H, but with them Nikon acknowledged only the professional market and maybe that of the affluent amateur segment. The D1X was obviously targeted to professional photographers needing the highest possible image quality in a convenient SLR digital body, using top class glass. The D1H was developed for news and sports pro photogs needing high speed of capture and transfer. However, there was a cry from the amateur market for an affordable yet high performance digital SLR camera. Then, such segment seems now well used to compact and light weight bodies. It looks like the D100 could very well be such a camera. So, if you are an advanced amateur or a professional photographer waiting for an N80-like digital camera to happen, the Nikon D100 will soon be on the shelves for you to feel and ponder, and most likely -– according to our intelligence -- well below the USD 2500 mark. The discussions around the subject are hot -- join them in the D100 Users Group: http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=837&forum=DCForumID58&viewmode=threaded Bo & JRP bo@nikonians.org jrpalacios@nikonians.org 2. Nikonians Official Photokina Event - September 2002 =========================================================== Are you interested in meeting other Nikonians for one of the world's largest imaging exhibitions? The last Photokina had over 160,000 visitors and this one will likely not be smaller. From Sep 25th - 30th 2002, the Photokina exhibition ("Worlds fair for Imaging") takes place in Cologne, Germany. We would meet together at the fair and the official event would be planned with one night together out in town. Use this opportunity to get to know some of those other online friends in "real life". We believe that this event is interesting for many Nikonians, not only Europeans. Mark Wagner of Texas is the coordinator for this event, and if you have any questions or ideas let Mark know in this discussion: http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID30/77.html 3. Get More out of your Pictures =========================================================== Here are some hints on how to achieve the most out of your pictures for the contest: http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID4/162.html 8. Assignment #8 -- Seasonal Change =========================================================== Our "Chief of Assignments", Darrell Young, has started a new assignment. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we are nearing the springtime of the year. In other parts of the world, winter is approaching. It is a time of seasonal change. Let's carry our cameras with us daily, and find evidence of that change. Do you have images of Jonquils pushing up through the snow? Have you seen trees with new buds, or old leaves changing to brilliant colors? How about flowers starting to open, newborn animals, friends wearing new clothes purchased for the season? Are the lovers showing up on the grass in the park? Use your Nikon to prove that seasonal change is upon us! Let's really show our abilities with this one. Let the Assignment begin... http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=48&forum=DCForumID29&viewmode=threaded 9. The New Manual Focus Body Forum =========================================================== The new Manual Focus forum is up and running. Thanks to Nikon for introducing the new FM3a, and introducing a new generation of Nikon users to the way things used to be. This new camera is getting some good press, and many of the querys and comments in the Manual Focus forum are related to this model. But for those of us who have been with Nikon for awhile, there are many other cameras for discussion here. So come on all of you F, F2, and F3 users, let us hear some war stories and adventures with these classics. Also, let's not forget one of the (many!) things that separate us from that "other" major camera brand... a lot of you auto-focus-using people can enjoy the benefit of adding a manual focus lens or two to your outfit. After you acquire one of these lenses, come on-line with us and tell how it is working out. On a sad note, Mike "Merlin" Graham's name has come up a couple of times on this forum, and at least one person has named his new FM3a "Merlin" as an homage to the popular manual focus advocate. I would like to think that Mike would be hanging out in this section of Nikonians if he were with us. His memory is very strong to many of us here. http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID68&conf=DCConfID3 10.
