Editors Note =========================================================== After years of frustrating navigation and careful assessment of what we wanted and needed, we began to design a site for passionate Nikon users like us. It was April 2000 when we had the pleasure of launching Nikonians.com. Slowly we began to grow in terms of registered members, visitor's traffic, and downloaded Mbytes. But after only a few months of being online, the growth rates increased rapidly. Unfortunately nothing comes without a cost, even success. These happy events eventually turned into a nightmare: the concurrent number of users at the site at any time led into the much dreaded "500 Server Error," forcing users to reload more than once to gain access to almost any page. Posting became erratic too. The consequent multiple postings aggravated the situation. The maintenance workload threatened to surmount our capacity to tackle it. Our server ran out of memory frequently--it was literally losing its mind. But somehow we continued to grow. A decision had to be made, so we made it--Move into a more robust, agile, powerful, and faster server. After the hard toil of the process of conversion and transfer, we grabbed the bull by its horns and took the opportunity to upgrade software with added functionalities. On January 26, 2002, the transfer was successfully executed and here we are, fully thrust into the future. Minor glitches still may appear, so we ask you to keep us posted and we thank you for your indulgence beforehand. Our thanks to all of you who sent us the many congratulatory notes and offers to help with work and/or money. We are currently working on formulas to allow you to show your appreciation to our efforts and contribute to the maintenance and continuous growth of our community with added services. Today we are the largest community for Nikon users on the worldwide web, with over 7,300 registered members and over 3,800 subscribers of this newsletter. This would not have been possible without your help and support--visitors, members, beta testers, and moderators. Again, from the heart: thank you all. Long live Nikonians! P.S. Belgian Nikonian Pascal Baetens recently interviewed the American photographer Jeff Dunas ("American Pictures"). For us in Germany, the latest issue of the magazine "Photographie" contains the interview. Nikonians Photokina Event =========================================================== Nikonian mwagner1 asked us why not have a Nikonians Photokina Event... Of course we would like to have one! Between Sep 25th - 30th 2002, the Photokina exhibition ("World’s fair for Imaging") takes place in Cologne, Germany and it would be nice if we could arrange a get-together. We believe that this event would be interesting for many of you, though we would need someone who could volunteer to coordinate a "Nikonians Event" of this sort. If you're interested in joining in on the event - or - if you would like to coordinate the event, please say so here: http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID30/77.html There is more information about Photokina right at the Messe Koeln homepage (which loads fairly slowly) http://www.photokina.de/servlet/PB/menu/1000215/index.htm 3. The Tokina AT-X M100AF =========================================================== "I had long yearned for a true macro lens. The great pictures of bees, butterflies, and detailed exotic flora had me wanting. Because of an accidental misfortune I could not buy the 105mm f/2.8D Micro Nikkor when I was out there. So, no Nikon that time around." http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/non-nikon_articles/tokina/Tokina_AT-X_M100AF/Tokina_AT-X_M100AF_1.html 7.
