International photo community 2006 Photographer of the Year Contest unveils next phase

No. 0025 - Released June 6, 2006

Nikonians®, worldwide community for Nikon® photographers and enthusiasts, congratulates segment 2 winners of their Nikonians Photographers of the Year 2006 Contest and reminds members of the deadline for the next segment, focusing on Landscape, Abstract/Digital Art and Sports. The winners receive an assortment of brand name accessories and are in contention for the 2006 Nikonians Photographer of the Year honors which includes prizes of Nikon cameras.

The largest international community of Nikon enthusiasts, known as Nikonians®, is gearing up for the most popular photography contest in its history.

The contest takes a unique approach, segmenting the annual contest by photographic styles and disciplines throughout the year, then taking the best of the semi-finalists on to the ultimate prize, which will be announced in February 2007.

Nico Housen of Belgium took top honors in the Wildlife category in
Segment 2 of the 2006 Nikonians Photographer of the Year Contest
with this photo of two Gentoo Penguins. It was taken on the Falkland
Islands with his Nikon D200.

"It's not really a new approach in terms of contests," said J. Ramón Palacios, co-founder of Nikonians. "Think of the international dog shows for instance. They recognize best of breed and at the end there will be a best of show. In photography we all have different specialties and at Nikonians we want to give all of our members a chance to take the top prize."

Segment 2 winners were recently announced, recognizing excellence in the Portrait, Wildlife and Micro/Macro categories.

Knut Askim of Norway took first place in the Portrait category, Nico Housen of Belgium took top honors in the Wildlife category, and Albert Valentino of the America was recognized for his first place win in the Micro/Macro specialty.

The Nikonians site provides all members a chance to see the results, which also include comments from the winners and a peek at the equally impressive photos posted by the second place winners. The results can be seen by going to the Nikonians Discussion site and clicking on the "Photo Contests & Moderator's Choice Awards" link.

Segment 3 contestants have a shot at the top prize if they have competitive entries available in the Landscape, Abstract/Digital Art and Sports categories. The deadline for entries is June 30.
