Picture size for borderless prints

You're asking too much of the precision of the paper feed. If you are setting up the image area exactly the same size as the paper, you leave no room for anything but absolute perfection (impossible with a roller feed mechanism) in paper alignment. The Epson printer driver scales the image up a bit in order to compensate for alignment variation - that's why you lose a little image area.
If you want more precision, you'll need to print with some border and trim to the image area. 8.5 x 11 isn't proportional to 35mm or to standard photo print sizes anyway, so a trimmed image is the only way you'll get a full frame print without cropping.

Instead I went out and bought a good paper cutter and print all my pics at 8x10. I use the cutter for precision straight cuts and the 8x10's fit the frames that are found everywhere.

Maybe it's something like 8.125x10.6 or whatever. Now resize the canvas (with centered image) to the original 8.5x11. You should now have an image with a white border. Print this and see if you discover anything.

In Photoshop 6, I'll set the image size to 8.5 x 11, and tell my Epson 1280 to print without borders. The result is that the full page gets filled, but a bit of the image gets clipped off.
I could spend some time and find out exactly how much smaller I should make the picture so that it just fits, but I'm hoping to save the time, paper and ink if someone else has been down this road before. Also, I'm wondering if a proportionate adjustment has to be made for other paper sizes.
Or has paper just gone the way of the McDonald's hamburger, and I haven't noticed ?
