Jason,
Thanks for the tip. I battled this exact problem last night trying to print an 8x10 onto letter sized paper. I was following the instructions in your CNX2 guide and had the following experience.
1) Double rotation - Not that I knew what to call it last night, but I was getting pretty frustrated with looking at the Epson preview window and seeing the things weren't going the correct direction. I ended up leaving the printer defaulting to landscape and CNX2 in portrait with the "Rotate to fit" box checked to finally get a "full sized" print.
2) "Full sized" print - This was problem number two. Without the "Use Output Resolution" set, I was getting a landscape print at roughly 6.5" by 8.25" in the lower left quadrant of the page. I believe a shutdown of CNX fixed that problem, but it was indeed strange. When I finally got the print out and centered on the page, it looked a little off, but I couldn't see why until I went to trim it later that night. Even though the "Use Output resolution" was set, the print came out at approximately 8.25" x 10.25". I checked all of the settings from the crop and the size/resolution and they all appeared to be correct. I ended up deleting the size/resolution step and re-applying it. This seemed to work and I ended up with an 8"x10" print.
I will test again tonight (I'm working on a color management issue) and verify my settings, but I believe I was able to follow your instructions from your guide once I re-applied the size/resolution step, left the paper orientation settings alone, and checked the "Rotate to Fit" box. I'll post back with my findings with a few different prints to see if I can nail down the workflow. All in all a pretty frustrating first time printing out of CNX2.
Thanks for the updates and great job on the books; they've been extremely useful.

Just a follow-up to my previous post...
I haven't had a lot of time tonight to test, but things haven't been working out that well for me with satisfactory prints. I switched over to 4x6 sized prints and cannot seem to get an accurately sized print out. I'm losing a portion on the edges. I've tried re-sizing with re-sampling and without. The only consistent item I've found is that for landscapes prints I need to have my printer set (printing preferences outside of CNX2) to landscape, CNX2 (page setup) set to portrait and then check the "Rotate to fit" box in order to get a reasonable print. Portrait was a little different where it seemed to want the printer and the page setup dialogs to agree on potrait.
I'm sure someone will come along and correct my mistakes on this, but I think I'll try printing out of CNX 1.3 tomorrow and see what happens.
Thanks,
Matt-

geography3 Registered since 13th Feb 2006Thu 19-Jun-08 10:39 PMI have tried what has been recommended with no success. Capture 1.3 had no problems in regards to printing so what has changed. I have emailed Nikon and sent them files and print screens of what is happening. They keep saying it has to do my settings and now they want all the information of my XP system. We are dealing with a bug in NX3. That is all. I could take a non cropped NEF file from my D40 and print a nice borderless 4X6 print from it. The sensor is already a 2X3 ratio so it should print a nice 4X6 with no problem like it did in 1.3.-

This is a bug.. just need to get them to see it..
I would also really like a setting that did the equivalent of Ctrl-0 when opening from View NX....

Another thing to try is to set the page orientation in your printer setup and then choose the "rotate to fit" option in the NX print menu.

kdsmithjr Basic MemberFri 11-Jul-08 11:38 AMI've tried NX2 several times now (i've used NX in all versions with success) and it doesn't work seamlessly with my epson r2400. I can get it to work, but you have to stop and take steps. Frankly, I consider NX2 to be a beta version at best. It should not be on the market yet; too many bugs.

On Windows machines .net frame ( required by Capture ) wants to control the printing on the O/S. When CaptureNX and the O/S collide it produces half printed, wrong orientation and other little annoyances.
Not a CaptureNX bug more like shoddy work.

Whose shoddy work are we talking about? I just tried to print a 4X6 borderless print that was already a portrait and clicked on rotate to fit and while I got a 4X6 it was not borderless. -

While I would like to agree with you on the MS .Net Framework being at the root of the problem, I can't see this as anything other than a NX bug. 1.3 continues to work just fine on my machine for printing where 2.0 does not. Nothing else changed on my PC except the version of Capture NX. BTW, IIRC, the new version of View NX works fine as well; it's been a while since I tested it, but I think that was how I finally got a complete print out when I started having problems.
Nikon/Nik changed something in the print subsystem of the new version and now it doesn't work. I'm not a programmer, but after years of supporting applications where the developers choose to not to follow the MS APIs I've seen things like this all over the place. I'm sure we'll 2.0.1 coming out before too long and now that this type of problem is known, Jay will add this to his list of things that he tests with upcoming releases. Perhaps he found the problem while working through his eBook, but Nikon/Nik has been slow to respond.
Anyway, happy rotating to fit printing.

This discussion certainly re-enforces my present workflow of when I do editing in NX or NX 2 to print in either Photoshop or Lightroom; I tend to prefer Lightroom because of all of the nifty things that you can do in their Print module (including adding an identity plate). Even when it works right, printing is one of the weakest parts of NX.

Thanks for the tip John4Jack. I hadn't thought about using a non-nikon product for printing. I only have PSE 5, but I believe it will accept a 16-Bit TIF for basic functions. I'll try a few prints doing all of my typical processing through output sharpening in NX then send the 16-Bit TIF to PSE5 for printing and see how I make out.

Jason, I am still having problems with printing. I have tried all you said to do. I use a Canon i9900 printer and it worked fine with NX1. I have tried every possible way to get a good print in NX2 and it simply cannot be done. I set paper size to 4X6 and cropped and resized to 4X6 and it all looks good in the preview in NX. But in the printer preview the picture does not even come close to filling the sheet, it usually is just to one side leaving a large white area on the top and right hand side. The prints come out the same was as the preview before printing look.
I have called Nikon Tech support twice now and they claim to have had no one complaining about this situation. Maybe we all need to call and email them at ask nikon Tech a question. I also have an open question awaiting an answer.
The only solution I have found to date is use the feature in the file tab (File/Open with...) that allows you to open an edited file in another program directly. I use this option once I have a photo edited. I set up the program I want in the preferences area in NX2 to select elements 5. This is a great way to do it by the way, since the photo is automatically opened up in Elements 5 as a TIFF and thus saves all the editing and color etc adjustments. The files print perfectly in PS just as before.
Hopefully they will get this fixed. Hope you are working with Nikon and they will listen. I bet you have more horsepower than I do.

I have been dealing with tech support at Nikon for a few weeks concerning the printing problem in NX2. They had me send files to them, computer info to them and so forth. They have not written back for a week now after my last reply to what they wanted. I keep telling them to just take a picture with any Nikon camera and see what happens when they try to print it. All they are going to do by denying any problem is to get people to use other software. I read some suggestions of how to work around the problem but that is not what I want. I want NX2 to print as NX1.3 did, VERY SIMPLY.-
#19. "RE: NX 2.0 Printing Tips" | In response to Reply # 18
I guess I have to concur with the frustration. I just shot a wedding and need to provide prints to couple. Guess I am going to stick with 1.3 version until a fix comes around for NX2.

#20. "RE: NX 2.0 Printing Tips" | In response to Reply # 0
This is a follow-up. I finally got NX2 to print a borderless print. The technique described at the start of this thread works. I was confused before. The important thing is to not touch or click any orientation button in page set up ahead of time.
What worked for me was to open a photo, edit it. I did not need to resize or crop it. Before printing I used page set-up. But all I did was to specify the paper size and type and color controls and print preview. DO NOT touch or click any orientation buttons in the page setup.
Then merely click the "print/file" or use the printer button up at the top and when print setup opens up rotate the photo if necessary to fit the displayed page area. Mine was a landscape photo so I rotated and it now displayed the picture landscape but rotated 90 degrees so that I was looking at it in portrait mode but with the picture rotated to fit. When I clicked print, the page setup window displayed again. I then used the opportunity to zero out any print margins to get a boderless print.
I did not have to resize or crop for this one. I suppose if I wanted an 8 X 10 photo I would have had to crop for this ratio during editing.
Thanks jason and I hope this will help others. Hope this gets fixed soon by Nikon. I will email them again right now.

When I go to print, on the initial Print Layout screen, I set it to the settings I want (1 UP, rotate to fit, crop image).
When I select the Page Setup button, on the Page Setup screen, the Printer button where you can go into the printer settings, is not selectable and there are print margins that cannot be changed. *** IMHO, this is what is wrong, it is essentially locked into the original print preferences ***
I then go ahead and select the Print button and the Print dialogue screen comes up. Now I can select on the Properties button and change the print preferences to what I want (paper type, paper size, borderless printing, etc.). I also select Print Preview because of the noted problems.
When the Print Preview happens, it still has the border. I cancel the printing and go back to Capture NX.
The next time I go to print, and from the Print Layout screen, select the Page Setup button, I can set the margins to 0 and the Printer button is enabled, fixing the problem identified above.
Hopefully this is helpful. Thanks.

Glad you figured it out. It sounds like you did exactly what I did and what was recommended at the start of this train of discussion. I have had a few emails from Nikon after I complained. In the last one they said something to the effect that there have been a "few isolated reports of printing problems". Like as if not everyone is having the problems and that they are investigating. I suggest you and everyone lodge a strong gripe with them. If they get enough gripes they might just do something about the problem. I even talked to them on the phone at tech support. I talked to three different people and none of them were aware of the probelm or were able to give any help.-

I purchased a NX 2 upgrade key and started experimenting in earnest with printing: The following setup works with my Canon iP4500 printer:
1) On the print page layout page, use a) Select layout: 1 Photo on Page, b) Rotate to fit (always, irrespective of image orientation).
2) In the printer driver, use Portrait Orientation (again, irrespective of image orientation).
That's all!
In order to arrive at this I first printed to a PDF-file, saving a bundle on inks and paper.
Hope this will prove helpful to others.

Thanks Imogens and all others who helped in this thread. I printed my first time tonight in NX2, and guess what? My print was cut off and was not printed 8x10, etc. I referred back to this thread that I recalled, and used the exact strategy that Imogens outlines, and my next print was correct - 8x10, 10 being long side horizontal, and specified "PORTRAIT" in the printer driver, correct output size in printed area, and exactly all else per the Imogens suggestion. Others also have stated the same thing (I think) in a little longer words above in this thread.
So I only wasted one sheet. Definitely a NX2 bug.(worked fine in NX)

And just to clarify here. Your PRINT Setup dialog (in the OS) must be set to PORTRAIT. Then allow NX 2.0 to "rotate to fit" in the NX print dialog. It's a case of "double rotation" otherwise.

I've been a "lurker" for quite a while on Nikonians but have not previously been tempted to directly participate since someone has usually "beat me to the point" or I was simply learning from the postings. However, my experience with printing from NX 2.0 has energized me to amplify and add to other's comments on this topic. I should note that your "work around" posted above partly catalyzed my finally upgrading my membership back to Silver.
NX 2.0 has printing bugs. I use a Windows XP Pro SP2 system and an Epson R800 printer that worked simply and seamlessly with NX 1.3 (and previous versions). Since I left NX 1.3 installed when I upgraded to NX 2.0, I fortunately can do direct comparisons between the two versions. (However, it doesn't appear that both versions can be run at the same time in different windows)
My workflow with 1.3 was simply to select File Print at whatever point I felt I was done with my edit list. I used the NX Print dialog to access the Page Setup dialog and choose my printer (the Epson R800 is not the default printer). Next I would choose the "Printer" button on the "Page Setup page to access the Printer Driver. In the Printer Driver I set the paper type, size, orientation and resolution (photo, best photo, best photo R), plus and most importantly, ICM & No (Printer) Color Management. (In actuality, I only had to set the "ICM & No Color Management" option as the remainder could be set in either the Page Setup or the Capture NX Print dialogs and they would correspondingly update the settings in the other) Saving these settings in the printer driver would drop me back to the Page Setup dialog where I would double check the paper size and orientation and could change them if necessary (They in turn would change the same settings back in the Printer Driver). Selecting OK from here would drop me back to the NX print dialog where I would choose Color Management and pick the specific Paper Driver. Next I would select 1 up, number of copies and I would print.
The NX driver would automatically adapt the resolution of the print for the paper without interpolation. That is a 4X6 might print at 750dpi and an 8.5X11 might print at 350dpi (just example numbers). I didn't worry about this because I knew that if I hadn't cropped much and wasn't printing too large I didn't need to specifically size the print and make decisions on interpolation utilizing the Edit - Size menu in NX. This was a real convenience.
With NX 2.0 I can no longer do this simple tiered workflow. First I have to remember to add an Edit-Size step to the edit list, regardless of final size. Next, if I choose File Print and then select Page Setup I can still change my printer but the "Printer" button to access the Printer Driver is now greyed out. So instead I must select File, Page Setup to change the Printer and then to access the Printer Driver. I then OK twice to get back up to the main menu and then choose File Print. Then I set the color management steps and print "1 up". (I have been using Page Setup to change print orientation but could try the auto rotation that you mentioned.) However, if I don't like the appearance of the print and want to try a "Printer Color Management" enhanced print I can't simply click on the Page-Setup button on the NX Print dialog. I must go back to the main menu File-Page Setup, then Printer, change the settings, back up twice, select File-Print, etc.
Since I have both programs working in the same computing resource environment, it eliminates other environmental variables. The NX Program print environment was changed and not for the better.
Jason, since you are a very accomplished NX user and author, you must have noted these types of differences (and perhaps more). I sincerely appreciate the work around solution that you have provided but have found it so unwieldy that I have reverted to NX 1.3 for any prints that I must do quickly like sets of 4X6s. Of course any changes that I do with tools specific to NX 2.0 don't appear in NX 1.3. I think that you are in a better credibility position than most of us to establish with Nikon the need to address these annoying bugs immediately and I sincerely hope you do so. I will also send a version of this letter to Nikon myself.

I have found Qimage to be an excellent addition to my workflow.

#39. "RE: NX 2.0 Printing Tips" | In response to Reply # 35
I just have to ask. What are your color management settings under EDIT/PREFERENCES/COLOR MANAGEMENT in NX2
Uless you have specific reason to change it I suggest that you leave the use this instead of embedded profile unchecked". So that if you already selected sRGB in your Nikon Camera then the picture will come up sRGB when you edit it. If you want to work in sRGB instead of the embedded profile then checking this will cause it to be converted to whatever you want. I have Adobe sRGB 4.0.0.3001 selected in this box with the box unchecked. I have the second option "CMYK Seperation Profile" set to Nikon CMYK 4.0.0.3000 and in the third option for the printer profile I have also selected Nikon sRGB 4.0.0.3001, but this can be overridden in the Print window when it comes up under the color control tab at the time of printing. I find that I get very good pictures that look pretty much what I see on the screen this way while other settings get some screwy results. Under intent I selected perceptual and leave the black point compensation unchecked.
Perhaps the moderator can jump in here give some better tips than my strictly amateur understanding. I cannot remember what he says in his NX2 guide. I have tried lots of things and those above seem to work best for me and my Canon i9900 printer.-

I updated and now can specify Lanscape or Portrait and the print with preview looks normal and prints normally. HOWEVER the print with preview is still always in the portait mode. At least the picture is all there and fills the box. They still have work to do since the orientation is still wrong for landape photos.

I output to JPEG and save in a folder. I then use the printing program that came with my Canon i9000 printer and (Easy Print) and print out 4x6 or 5x7 prints without any issues at all.
If I make a change in Capture NX 2, I just save it and print it using the software that comes with the printer, which matches up the color profiles and works perfectly.
While I agree that NX2 ought to output seamlessly, I never face that issue because I am never printing from NX2.

1) Use the NX Crop Tool to crop the image to exactly the aspect ratio of your paper (eg, 4x6).
2) Then use the Size/Resolution tool in NX to size the image to the paper size.
3) Choose the paper size and orientation in the Page Setup dialog.
4) In the NX Print dialog, choose "1 per page" (don't use Output Resolution), and make sure the page orientation is correct so that the preview looks right in the dialog box.
5) In the Printer driver, do NOT change page orientation settings-- this will "double rotate" the image.
I hope this helps.
