Thanks for grabbing it, Gerold. Donna, is this related to a specific lens and camera combination? Total stab in the dark here, but...it almost looks as if a cleaning fluid was left to dry on the sensor and maybe it only shows up with certain types of subject matter. Kind of like a spec on my sensor that only shows when I have a nice blue sky and am shooting at f/11 
. And you do mention that it typically shows up in sky areas. Try taking a shot of a blue sky or even a blank wall at say f/2.8 and then f/16 and see if it only shows up at f/16 (or at all). I would try a good wet cleaning of the sensor, unless you see it with multiple bodies. If you are not comfortable doing that, you may have to take it in to be cleaned professionally. Or...my theory could be light years off base.

I have been doing some looking at file sizes etc. The image that has the lines that I uploaded is 240 pixels/in. I looked at another copy of the same image that has 300 pix/in and it is much better, but there are still some lines as you look closely around where the bright spot comes from the sun.
Am I correct in thinking that if I save at anything less than 300 pix/in that I am going to have this problem? For most publishers they want at least 300 dpi. How different is that than 300 pixels per inch? If I want to save an image with a higher resolution, how would I move it around on the internet since most places do not take an image that large. I am very confused on how to fix my problem so my pictures don't have the lines and still make them usable. I cropped one down to a 5x7 that is 3300x2357 and 471.42 pix/in. I could not upload it. I wanted to show you what it looks like at high resolution.

It's definitely a problem with either too much jpeg compression (low or basic quality setting), too much editing of a jpeg image or a bit of both.Rick Walker

It's posterization caused by low bit depth of the image.

I have to agree with Alan, this looks like digital artifacts as a result of too aggressive post processing of lower color bit depth image. Are you possibly shooting in JPG with a smaller image size? What image editing software are you using to make adjustments? This information would help us determine the cause of this.
These "lines", as you describe them, are called banding or posterization. They appear when you try to make significant tonal adjustments to an image and/or areas with a continuous tone (such as a sky). Since the image has a reduced color bit depth and lesser adjustment latitude (inherently the characteristics of JPGs) there is much less color data to smoothly realign color hues to maintain a smooth tone. The banding or blotchiness caused by color stepping is the result.

Hi Ernesto, I always shoot 14 bit raws. Enough colors I think. I have these lines when a) aperture was too small and b) too much sharpening.
I do always shoot 14 bit raws and take adobe colors. Only when I turn the pictures into jpgs I use srgb.
Or did I misunderstand your post?

Once in my computer I often, not always, but often, use Photomatix Pro 5.02 (64 bit). On this picture I may have put it in photomatix with one photo and let the program try to do the HDR look. I don't usually mess with the sliders too much because honestly, I don't know what a lot of them do. Maybe if I did I would not have this problem. I really don't know even how to do layers in PS. I am older and learning new things is very difficult so please don't tell me to stop using Photomatix. If you can tell me where I can learn how to use it better, or if that is the problem, that would be very helpful! Thanks again!DonnaK

Hello Donna,
use the program you want to use. Maybe you start with normal post processing and not HDR
HDR is a bit complex.
I am old too and I am still learning.

You can use one or many images in composite (HDR) to tone map an image. If you say you start with raw files then I would suspect that somewhere along the line you are exporting out of Photomatix a much smaller and compressed JPG. This could be producing the banding in your images.
EDIT:
I just looked at the file size of your uploaded image. It shows that the image is a total of 62 KB. That is rather small for an image that is 800 pixels on the long side. We allow a file size well above that. Try setting a compression level to give you about a 650 KB file to begin with. This will probably help some.Ernesto Santos

Mon 28-Dec-15 06:29 PMFor an image of 1800x1200 pixels, 276 KB is going to result in banding due to too much compression. A compression level that results in 500 KB will probably look OK.

I can't think of any reason why the aperture setting would produce any artifacts at all. Artifacts are a product of the digital capture and processing, not the size of the lens opening. Sharpening could be culprit - but honestly if your sharpening to the degree that you get banding then you are applying too much.

I do usually open up a photo in PS after I take it through Photomatix. When I do, I will often use Topaz Denoise. I almost never intentionally sharpen anything, unless it really looks like it needs it. I know some of these programs do it if you use their default settings. I do shoot most of my landscapes stopped down quite a bit, most around f/22 and usually a lower iso, under 200. Most of the time this calls for longer exposures so I almost always use a tripod and a hand held remote. I really need a book on Photomatix and Topaz. Watching tutorials does not help me learn. I'm different, I guess!

I have a technical question for you if you don't mind helping me. What causes all of lines in a digital image? Is it chromatic aberration? How can I get rid of it? What am I doing that causes it? I'm not very good with Photoshop and I don't even use layers. I don't always get these lines, but when I do they are really bad! I've been trying to post a pic of what I'm talking about but I can't get it to upload. These are usually wavy lines that show up in the sky. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
