I see that Bill Gates' merry men have approached the Joint Photo Expert Group with a request for them to consider a new JPEG standard.

According to the blurb I read, Microsoft talk about it being in effect JPEG HD.

Again, according to Microsoft, among "a host of features and benefits are.......

Better image fidelity
Higher image compression efficiency
Flexible editing features

Apparently JPEG have taken this approach seriously and will start gathering information and getting the opinions of it's members.
