• 32-bit file structure (though 24 bits are reserved for Microsoft)
• All files compress to 100k for Nikonian upload
• Flexible editing — double-clicking launches Microsoft Word, soon to contain the best image editing tools

According to the blurb I read, Microsoft talk about it being in effect JPEG HD.
Again, according to Microsoft, among "a host of features and benefits are.......
Better image fidelity
Higher image compression efficiency
Flexible editing features
Apparently JPEG have taken this approach seriously and will start gathering information and getting the opinions of it's members.
