Hi,
In your FAQ about Control Points you mention the fact that you can modify the mask created by a control point by using the selection tools (lasso etc). I think this will be a very powerful way of modifying control point behaviour, but so far I have been unable to use this facility. Whenever I try to use, for example, lasso within a control-point selection mask the whole mask turns red and I'm at a loss what to do next. Maybe a step by step example would help?

bobj Charter MemberMon 10-Jul-06 09:38 AMActually you can not modify the mask. Not directly at least. What you can do is to add an additional mask to the Edit Step that overlays all the masks from all the points in that step.
You do so by using the paintbrush and +/- buttons next to it, along with the other selection tools on the toolbar. First click on any Control Point in that step and then the Advanced button. Check the box for "show selection" to reveal the mask for that point. Then paint away with the paintbrush. In counterintuitive fashion, what paints as red will hide the effects of all points in that step (not just the point you have selected and are viewing the mask for). Where you don't paint reveals the effects of all points in that step (not just the point you have selected and are viewing the mask for).
Odd but true. After painting, use "show selection" to view the mask for a different point in the same Edit Step and the same red painting will be there. You can change the diameter, softness and transparency for toe brush to get the results you want, but to affect only a single point it must be in an Edit Step by itself.
Jason or Rick. let me know if you've found a different solution.
I've also somehow caused (twice now I think) a weird bug where my entire image, mask and everything disappears and is replaced with white with only the red mask showing. I have no idea yet what exactly causes this or how to get out of it other than to close and re-open the image.

DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Mon 10-Jul-06 09:43 AMThanks for the insight, Bob. The pixels selected with a control point can only be modified by interactions with other control points. On top of that, you can manually paint in (or out) regions of the image to be masked using the suite of selection tools (brush, lasso, etc).
Bob- if you can replicate the bug, let me know via email and I'll pass it on to the development team.

Thank you for clarifying Base Settings.
When I clear out all Base Settings, make edits, save the file and then re-open it: Base Settings is repopulated with adjustments that I never made. I then have to clear out the Base Setting adjustments again, during which the Edits that I DID make are deactivated. Finally, I must reactivate the Edits to get back to where I left off with the image.
How do I save a file exactly as I left it?
Thanks!

DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Tue 11-Jul-06 12:59 PMWhen you make changes to Base Settings, the little checkboxes become active, even if you have the setting at neutral (no change).
For example, I usually turn in-camera sharpening to "None". This will show as an active "base setting". For example, if you have NR turned on in the camera, but you shoot at ISO 100, the checkbox is checked because it was "active". If you open up the setting, you'll see that the NR is indeed at 0%.

"...checkboxes become active, even if you have the setting at neutral (no change)".
Yes, this seems to be the case, so no major grief thus far.
I just get nervous when I see checkmarks...feel like I have to go see what I did (not) do.
I'll readjust my camera settings to try and "clean up" my Base Settings.
Thanks for your help and fast reply!

Ideas and/or Bugs:
Exposure Comp - arrow keys move in 1EV steps, should be less.
Arrow key + Shift key to make adjustments in larger increments.
Ability to arrange the base adjustments to a user preference. Some adjustments are never or seldom used.
Ability to change the order of adjustment steps or insert a step in the edit list.
A way to turn off camera sharpening when a file is opened. I use camera sharpening for veiwing on the camera but set to none for processing and use USM.Batch processing to turn off camera sharpening takes too long.
Going "full screen" for the NX window puts the lower part beneath the Windows task bar. If I minimize a picture it will be beneath the task bar.

Yes, the taskbar properties can be changed but I would like the taskbar to always show and NX is the only application I have that doesn't allow that.

Is this something that you can do in NX now or something that you want to be able to do? If you can do it now, tell me how, please. All I can do is drag that slider, or type in numbers.

In the meantime, you can use the "Fill" tool to select all and deselect all by toggling it with the +/- icons next to the fill tool.
If you have made a lasso selection, you deselect it by choosing the lasso tool and double-clicking on the image.

#13. "Using NEF files from NX in other programs" | In response to Reply # 12
JGVilla Registered since 17th Dec 2005Wed 12-Jul-06 05:24 PMI've carefully read through the comments up to now and I figured (and checked) that other programs ONLY read the changes you make in the Base Adjustment List. Changes made in the Edit List are (at the moment) NOT carried over to (for instance) Photoshop CS2. Although Photoshop states that the NEF has been edited and that the edited file is read in this is only true for the changes made in the Base Adjustment List. If you first you use Capture NX and afterwards need to do some retouching in Photoshop the only way to carry over all adjustments is to first save the file in TIFF format and then to load that file in Photoshop. I think a clear "warning" might be valid in the FAQ list.

#14. "RE: Using NEF files from NX in other programs" | In response to Reply # 13
JGVilla Registered since 17th Dec 2005Wed 12-Jul-06 05:54 PMI did some further testing and the problem relates to the left over nikon files from Capture 4.4. ("Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi" and "Nikon YCC TIFF.8bi").
These files can exist in any of the following Photoshop directories:
c:\program files\adobe\adobe photoshop cs2\plug-ins\file formats,
c:\program files\adobe\adobe photoshop cs2\plug-ins\adobe photoshop only\file formats,
c:\program files\common files\adobe\plug-ins\cs2.
If you remove these nikon files from the adobe photoshop subdirectories the edited NEF file from Capture NX will be read into photoshop cs2 via camera raw and ALL adjustments are carried over. So although Capture 4.4 can co-exists with Capture NX on the same computer these (old) nikon files should be removed.

#16. "RE: Using NEF files from NX in other programs" | In response to Reply # 15
DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Wed 12-Jul-06 08:13 PMAs others have pointed out, ACR and other RAW converters are able to read the RAW data, "as shot" white balance, and (to a certain extent) exposure data.
Any changes that you make to a NEF in Capture 4 or NX are not read by any of the other RAW converters.
Any change you make to a NEF in a 3rd-party RAW converter are not read by Nikon Capture.
Even though Nikon Capture writes changes to the NEF file directly, it puts those tags somewhere where the other converters aren't looking. For example, if I change WB to fluorescent from the "as shot" setting of "Flash", ACR still reads the WB as "flash". Capture 4, however, will read the modified WB information.

Yes, the USM tool works the same as far as I can tell.
My "default" sharpening routine is to set "in camera" sharpening to "none" and then go for 55-5-4 in a USM Edit Step. In fact, I've saved that as a preset.

Thanks. I heard, I believe that other guy on your show say that once, I tried it and liked it. I thought it looked the same in NX but seems I heard someone saying it wasn't the same.
Hey, there's been a lot of comments on the resource demands of the software. Perhaps you've mentioned it but just in case...
You Coloradians have it made btw. In Maine the power grid only allows one G5 per county. After that the lights in the hospitals and orphanages start dimming. But for those pc users that are struggling, you don't necessarily need to run out and buy a new computer.
First, a lot of pc's are already bogged down by all the background software that's running which can also on occasion conflict with other running programs. Second, ram is pretty cheap right now and upgrading to 2 or 4 gigs (depending on the age of your mb) can make a huge difference in performance for graphics at a relatively low cost. As well, if you're planning on Vista you definitely want as much ram as you can get. Sure, a faster or dual processor makes a difference but for a lot of pc users a ram upgrade would make a huge difference. Even those with new factory computers...Dell, Gateway, etc. are going to find that the machine was loaded with a ton of software in the startup that really chews up your resources. I don't think NX is as slow as some think.
Last, for those deciding to go the new pc route, consider keeping your old one and converting it to a network storage device. For the cost of a pair of big hd's even an old P3 like mine can solve all your storage and backup problems and is upgradable. You can easily swap out hd's when you need more space. Its computing on a budget but it works. I'm not a Mac user but I believe an old pc used as network storage is accessible from your Mac. Jason, you'd know better on that.

DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Fri 14-Jul-06 08:00 AMRegarding speed-- the image continues to be rendered in the background even after you first start working on it. I find for reasons I don't understand, that the image cache seems to work better after I do an initial save.
Although my system has 5GB of RAM installed, I have yet to go over 900MB with NX. I routinely exceeded 1GB of RAM used with NC4.
Hard drive space is valuable-- not just to store your images but also to improve disk cache performance. That's one reason why laptops sometimes struggle with major image editing jobs-- slower and smaller disk drives.

Good info....Thanks.
Im curious about a couple things.
1, Is there a workflow process for edit multiple images like in orevious Capture? I dont see anything.
2, Also, I have noticed when opening images in NX sometime before the progress bar completes the image changes. Contrast, color balance etc changes. What is making these changes? I prefer the image unchanged. I have tuened off base settings but that has made no difference. I have looked at the camera settings and played with those with out getting the image back. Any ideas.
3, Is there a way to make changes to the base settings and keep them as the default bias when open any and all imaeges?
Thanks in advance for the advice.....

DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Fri 14-Jul-06 08:47 PMThe changes that you see are when Capture NX applies the "in camera" settings to your image-- everything the way it was set in the camera, including tone curve, sharpening, color mode, etc.
To get the most "plain" image, set your camera to use:
Tone curve: low
Color Mode: II
Sharpening: None
Noise Reduction: OFF
Or, use ACR or another RAW converter that ignores the in-camera settings.

After editing a raw file with Capture NX and then using "open with" to open the file in Photoshop (or Elements 4.0) do all of the changes made in Capture Nx get transfered to Photoshop? Photoshop Elements 4.0 indicates that it is opening a Tiff file, suggesting that NX is writing to a temporary Tiff file as an intermediary.
Can you confirm and/or elaborate?

#26. "RE: Using NEF files from NX in other programs" | In response to Reply # 25
bobj Charter MemberSun 16-Jul-06 12:04 PMYes, that's the way it works. Capture NX renders the NEF file with all its changes and edits as a tiff file, then opens it in the target application.

I have several files that I have edited with the NX program and when I open with CS2 the changes I made with NX are not in the file that shows in PS.
I do not use ACR but open my files in PS with the NEF Raw software?
I still have Capture 4.4 installed on my computer do you think this software is sending the files to PS?
Thanks,

#32. "RE: Using NEF files from NX in other programs" | In response to Reply # 31
DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Tue 18-Jul-06 12:43 PMIf you open a NEF in Photoshop-- it still needs to be converted to a bitmap file type. This can be done with the Capture 4 NEF plug-in or ACR. Neither will read the NX Edit Steps. The Nikon NEF plug-in will read the base adjustments.
If you want to open a file in Photoshop that you edited in NX-- you need to do one of the following procedures:
A) Use the "Open With..." command from the NX file menu. You will need to set the "Open With" application to PS in the NX preferences window. This method has the advantage of not saving an intermediate file, but the filename will not be preserved.
B) Save a copy of your NEF as a TIFF or JPEG, then open that file in Photoshop. This method has the advantage of preserving the original image filename, but is not as "seamless" as using the "Open With..." command.

I'm begging for some help. I am unable to reproduce the brilliant saturated colors that appear when I open and image (shot with a d200 in adobe RGB or sRGB, jpeg or raw) in capture NX in other programs. I've tried converting the color profiles (to numerous types), I've tried saving the images as TIFFs and Jpegs; I've tried opening as a TIFF from capture NX, I've tried overriding the camera settings, but the images always appear more saturated in NX than in photoshop, internet explore, preview, etc.--iView and Safari, however, seem to read the color profile properly. The difference in saturation is dramatic. I've emailed nikon and they told me to contact Adobe and the other companies to ask why they're not reading Nikon profiles--come on! Any advice?
-
#55. "RE: Using NEF files from NX in other programs" | In response to Reply # 44
I've figured out the problem. I use 2 displays (my laptop display and a viewsonic), each with a different color profile, balanced so they look the same if their respective profiles are recognized. I drag my photo programs to the larger remote screen for viewing. Elements, Preview, and other programs recognize the profile of the remote screen and display in its colors, but NX continues to use the laptop profile, which appears much more saturated on the remote screen. I can get around the problem by disabling the laptop screen and using the viewsonic as my desktop--but now I don't get the benifits of two screens. The colors are still slightly differnt between NX and other programs, but much more accurate.
Just an additional note to say that Nikon never responded to my second request for help, which is quite dissappointing.

I used to be an accomplished photographer with film, multiple formats. Did all my own darkroom work, etc...
After being away other than Point and Shoot basic family photo type of stuff - I am very excited to resurrect my photo habit with my purchase of the D200 w/ 18-200 AF zoom.
I am very impressed by the capabilities of the camera. My photo composition and 'eye' capabilities are still very good.
However, taking that digital image and doing the kinds of things I used to do in a darkroom - digitially - has been embarrasingly overwhelming.
I am very computer literate - so its purely the 'digital concept' I'm struggling with.
I have downloaded the NX trial - have ACS - just don't even know how to get started...
Where can I get started on some basics. I'm just fine at low-end tools for removing red-eye, cropping, adjusting basic image contrast, etc.
However, whether it is NX or ACS - I'm lost on just getting started.
Want to work with RAW images - high quality images are extremely important - that's why I've waited to go digital for so long.
The thought is to learn NX from scratch - maybe migrate to ACS once I understand the concepts...
Thanks!!!

Just a follow up comment to luigidk's...Has there been any self help books been published regarding using and mastering Capture NX??
I've never used Capture 4.x before and have recently used NX and found it quite impressive and can do some things better than CS2. My present workflow has been entirely CS2 based, but now I think NX has a new home in my workflow. But it would be real nice to have a "how to use NX" book to refer to. Has anyone run across such a book?

It is a bit early for a NX book i think but it would certainly be usefull. An informal 'Scott Kelby' type walk through would be handy.
One small niggle i have found. I cannot delete direct from my flash card. My printer has a card reader dock that i use. In Capture 4 i can whiz through my shots and delete the horrors from my card straight away......I am unable to find a way of doing this on NX.
Any pointers?

DrJay32 Nikonian since 11th Mar 2003Wed 19-Jul-06 11:21 AMJeremy,
You'll probably want to use the White Balance tool and choose the "Set Gray Point" feature. Then you get a dialog box that lets you use the eyedropper tool. The easiest way to access this menu is by going into the "Camera Settings" menu, and choosing "Capture NX" from the WB pull-down menu.
This changes the WB setting in the RAW file itself, and is probably the best way to do it.
If, however, you are working on a TIFF or JPEG, you can use the "gray point" eyedropper tool from the Capture NX palette. It's the one with three little eyedropper icons. Select the grey point eyedropper ( it's the one on the far right) and click on the WhiBal in your image.

So in my workflow I work with Adobe DNG. No other way to have both Nikon RAW and Leica RAW in one workflow with the same software. DNG makes it possible!
If I ask Nikon (in the Netherlands) why they do not support Adobe DNG they just say (a bit angry) ´NO`. No reason given. OK.
So now I ´m sure that Capture NX will not work with neither Leica Raw nor Adobe DNG. And that is very very sad for me!! (Also for Nikon! (see the PS))
Capture NX with DNG would give a super and powerfull software combination not onlt for Nikon users! But there often seem to be high walls around busineses.
If the developers of Nikon read this: yes this is a suggestion for making good software (NX) into super software (NX accepting DNG) and usable for non-Nikon users also. Great ideas are free bof charge
My question to Nikon: make NX open to DNG! It makes NX supersoftware. Now its just above average to me and other DNG users.
Second question: if Nikon doesn´t react positive to DNG (why not?), is there any computer wizard out there that is able to program some software to make Capture accept DNG (I do not ask for Leica RAW as that would be a silly question).
Thanks for thinking with me!
Johan Hahn
Netherlands
P.S. I posted this question also on another place in the Nikonians site but maybe this is a better place. I hope it reaches Nikon. In my viuew it is very competitive for Nikon to open NX for DNG (and the RAW´s of other types if possible). It gives non-Nikon users the chanmce to use NX and some will get converted to other Nikon products It´s just an idea!

Thanks for the suggestion. As for a compact 8MP camera with a RAW output, there is always the Coolpix 8800. Of course, there is a new 10.2 MP digital being announced by Nikon in 20 days...

Johan,
For what it's worth, Nikon has infomed me of the following regarding Capture NX feedback:
"I am the Senior Technical Support/Quality Assurance Specialist for Nikon USA.
I am also handling all of the Capture NX issues.
You asked, "....would like to know if Nikon is interested in user feedback/enhancements..."
Does a bear frolic in the woods? Absolutely!! Your feedback is needed NOW at the 1.0 version to shape future versions!"
So it would be advisable to send Nikon your request directly at support@nikontech.com and address it to Heinrich Beck

Well others might not say so but I'd definitely call this a bug. If you add IPTC info to an image and then click the "-" to close the IPTC panel, it will LOSE ALL THAT INFO YOU PUT IN! This is regardless of you clicking "ok" or saving after you have closed the panel. It seems to only save it if you "save" or "save as" with the panel open.
EDIT: It's also more than a minor annoyance that if you save IPTC batch info it doesn't make an automatic shortcut to your save like it does with the image settings batches. You have to go to the folder its saved in and open the file. Very tiresome when you have to add that same info to 100+ images. I think there should be an options checkbox somewhere that would allow your preferred default ITPC and adjustment settings to be automatically applied to every image opened, or just applied manually like they are at present (either piece by piece or through batch menus).

Do I have to just "wing it" and go with what looks right using the slider or is there some tried and true method for correcting lens distortion with NX with various lenses and focal lengths?

This may be where we as a comminity have to help ourselves. I was thinking about how I would have to make a small cheat sheet of my 5 or 6 lenses I use at various focal lengths. I'd have to shoot a couple of different calibration targets at a few different focal lengths for each lens. But then I'd be done and could rapidly add them as I edit my images.
Personally, I want to avoid photoshop and big TIFF files if I can.
Nikon hasn't done us much of a service with the Distortion Control tools in NX. But on the bright side most of us only have a few lenses to correct. Perhaps we could make an anchored post here with a small database/spreadsheet of the correction factors that work for different lense and focal lengths. I'm like you, I have a Tokina 12-24 that needs a bit of "help" at the wide end. Same for my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.
The chair rail in my dining room is about to get a photgraphic workout..... And then something outside that is appropriate for longer focal lengths.
When in Photoshop CS2 I use PTLens since I'm on a PC. Same result as what you use on the Mac.

Basically get something with naturally straight lines.
In one indoor photo I made with my D50 and a Sigma 18-200 lens, I used a n undocked palet as a straight horizon reference for rotation. Then I used the long wooden beams in the back of a sofa as my reference as I applied NX distortion correction iteratively.
Something like that is what we would have to do for all our lenses and at multiple focal lengths. Modern buildings with long straight edges or lines are a good target.

I have recently obtained Capture NX and currently I am in the process of learning what I can do with it. Ditto for CS2.
I gather from discussions I read here that NX does not do a good job of correcting barrel distortation, compared to other programs.
I shoot with a D70s and like to use my 16mm F2.8 fisheye for close up and nature/senic shots because it gives me the greatest wide angle of all my lens.
The trade off of course is the barrel distortion. I use the lens correction in NX and find that it does a great job for me if I set the slider at around 75%. It is quick and it is easy. I do not have to crop the result because the edges remain straight and true.
By comparison, if I save the same image as a Tiff and open it in CS2 and then use CS2 to do the same correction the result is horrible.
CS2 scallopes the outer edges of the photo greatly by the time the distortion has been completed. This causes me to have to do a drastic crop on the image to be left with a straight edged photo.
I find NX to be far easier to use than CS2. Perhaps CS2 will do a lot more things than NX, but what a lot of work to accomplish this.
Am I clear on this distortion correction comparasion, or is there something I am missing here?

The batch save command from the browser has a strange behavior. Whatever I choose as quality for jpg, the resulting file size is always the same.
This doesn't happen when I use the same save command from the edit context.
I would like to know if it is only me with my configuration (French version) as I saw nothing about this in different forums
Thanks a lot

I do use the command + keystrokes to increase the image size but still have a very hard time deciding which images are keepers. I'd love to see a future upgrade of NX provide a larger view of the image. I do select several images and right click to select "compare in editor" to make my decisions. But it seems I almost always have to use the editor and not the browser to decide which shots are keepers. This is the only part of Capture NX that is frustrating. I'd like to be able to make quicker decisions on which shots are keepers. Everything else about Capture NX is great.
Jason, do you have any hints as to how to make better, more efficient use of the browser to decide which shots to keep? Maybe in a Nikonians podcast? Love your podcasts. Bought the book and it's helped me a lot. Thanks for the supplement and those extra settings!

The light table and the larger thumbnails are ok, but I really want a nearly fullscreen, ultra fast, preview so I can evaluate focus, expression, etc before tagging for possible processing.
RawShooter is extremely good at this, but of course doesn't have the super whizzy control points.
I use EXIFPRO to do this presently, but again, have to remember a bunch of file names, etc, because there is now way to transfer tags.

Though I'm pleased with the software, my excitement is dampened by all the bugs and how slow it performs.
- All of the sliders (exposure comp) are very finicky, they skip in increments when they should slide smoothly. CS2 works like a breeze on my computer, so I don’t think it’s my computer.
- Crashing, after about 30 or so images NX likes to freeze up and I have to reboot. So now I just close it out and re-open it after a certain amount of time. What a pain that is!
- Windows, it’s a real pain in the butt when I close windows I don’t want to use, i.e. Photo Info and Bird’s Eye, and they re-open after I open an image or they’re still on my second monitor, but they’re all grayed out.
I’m thinking about purchasing it, but why should I pay $145.00 for a program loaded with bugs? I just paid Nikon $324 for a lens cleaning (which is outrageous) and it still returned with the same foreign object on one of the inner elements, so I guess I’m not surprised NX has problems.

About Tip #1 & #2 in the FAQ - I am a little bit confused about the order in which NX processes different steps in “Base Adjustments” and “Edit Steps”. As I understand it, the user must be careful when setting up "Edit Steps" to make sure things are done in the right order (noise reduction first, sharpening last etc.). In "Base Adjustments" I have noticed that "Noise Reduction" is further down the list than, say, "Levels & Curves". Does that mean I should abandon "Base Adjustments" alltogether or will NX automatically apply all changes in "Base Adjustments" in correct order? And how does “Base Adjustments” interact with “Edit Steps”? Is NX smart enough to recognize, that “Noise Reduction” will be done in a later Edit Step, and process that before any adjustments made in “Base Adjustments” for instance?
-
#64. "RE: Ideas for Capture NX Tips and Tricks FAQ" | In response to Reply # 63
walkerr Registered since 05th May 2002Thu 24-Aug-06 07:29 AMFrom what I understand, the base steps are essentially rehosted Capture 4.4 code and will be executed in the optimum order. Edit steps occur after that and are processed in the order they appear on the screen, hence the need to think about how they're sequenced. I've used NX for a while now and here's what I do for noise reduction:
- I have a settings file that automatically turns off in-camera sharpening as well as noise reduction in the base settings.
- I then add a Noise reduction step (also a settings file) with parameters I like (I prefer a bit less Noise reduction than the Nikon defaults). Often I'll just skip this and do the noise reduction later in Noise Ninja, but Capture works fine for quick stuff.
- That's followed by levels/curves adjustments and U-point fixes
- Capture sharpening occurs last and is also done by a settings file.
As with most RAW converters, settings files can speed-up your workflow considerably, especially if there are certain settings you use on a frequent basis. The ones on my system do the following:
- Turn-off in-camera sharpening
- Turn-off noise reduction
- Turn-off both in-camera sharpening and noise reduction
- Noise Reduction presets for ISO 400 and 800
- Color Modes I, II and III
- Low, Medium-Low and Medium contrast levels
- A pseudo-Velvia color boost focused on the green-yellow and red bands that's done via the LCH editor.

walkerr Registered since 05th May 2002Thu 24-Aug-06 01:38 PMThis will be from memory since I don't have NX in front of me (I'll update it tonight if my memory is faulty), but here's an example for changing the color mode:
- Go into either the base settings or camera settings (the latter is quicker) and change the color mode to whatever you like. For example, you might switch from Mode II to Mode III if you want to pump up the greens and reds.
- Go to the Batch menu item and then select Save Settings. You'll get a window that allows you save either all the settings in a given NEF or a subset. In this case, you want to select just the color mode parameter. Give the settings file a name that makes sense to you (like Color Mode III), and you're done.
You can open up a file and then select this setting file by going into Batch, Load Settings, and then select Color Mode III. This change will then be made to the file. For things that you do often, it's much quicker than going through the menus. It's particularly handy if you're multiple steps on a frequent basis. Turning off in-camera sharpening and applying USM sharpening is a good example. You can also have this settings file applied as a batch job to a series of files. This is very handy if you inadvertantly set an in-camera setting to the wrong value. A good example is on a recent trip I accidentally left a fairly wild tone curve active in my D2X. It resulted in fairly significant overexposure. I ran a batch job against the files and restored them to a normal tone curve setting. It was very easy compared to doing it manually.

Regarding the "Camera Settings" sharpening vs. USM. Jason´s suggested USM settings (55-5-4) comes pretty close to the camera "Normal" sharpening as far as I can tell from watching the screen, and actually appears to introduce less noise. Is the "Normal" setting (and thus the USM 55-5-4) optimized for print lab pictures? The reason I ask is that a professional print job usually needs a different (less) sharpening than an inkjet (home) print job.

walkerr Registered since 05th May 2002Tue 29-Aug-06 06:27 AMThe setting Jason mentions is for a first stage sharpening (capture sharpening is a common term) that is followed up by output sharpening in Photoshop. This setting (50-55, 5,4) works well for a high resolution (D2X or D200) image at lower ISOs where a lot of detail is desirable. At 50, it's very similar to what you'll get with capture sharpening from Photokit Sharpener or Nik Sharpener 2.0. For portraits, you'll want to back-off the first parameter a bit (down to 35-40) as well as increasing the last one from 4 to around 8. Otherwise, you'll get way too much detail and your subjects won't like it. For higher ISO's, you'll want to increase the last parameter from 4 to around 8 or higher so that noise isn't accentuated.
If you're not going to sharpen for output in Photoshop, you'll want to increase the first parameter by around 15-20 and increase the radius a bit, too. This isn't a method I use (I use Photokit to do that), so I can't provide fully tested settings.

As I'm using the NX trial version now for some days I wonder if there is an options or settings menu where you can set defaults that are used in the program.
e.g. set the chromatic abberation setting to off for improving performance and only set it to on if needed
or my biggest concern, when saving a file in JPEG there is a dialog
that shows the quality level of the file to be saved. This dialog is
always set to "good balance" where I mostly want a "high" or "highest quality". So evertime I save a file in JPEG I have to select the quality. Woold be good here to have a default setting.
Maybe that I missed it from the user guide or didn't see this settings dialog, but such thing would be a very good feature.

I have an older Dual Processor (2) Xeon at 3.2 (not core duo but hyper threading) and 4 GB of RAM on an IBM Z-Pro and it seems to work OK (compared to my 2.4 Dell with 2GB (This is one of those 64 Bit EMT - Xeons but running 32 bit XP) I have a Extreme Edition 3.6 CPU also but have not have the motherboard to put it in. The hot air blown from those things can burn your legs if you are not careful.
I think for changing some of the defaults (like the jpeg export quality selection), one has too look into the registry or some .inf files. I'll take a look.
I echo the statement putting in RAM, but I think you need good drives also, and maybe even RAID. Is there a way to designate a scratch disk in NX.
There is a method from gamers about tuning XP with regards to the pagefile. I'll ask the gamers/tuners/overclockers at work. They said that unless you tune it, you do not actually use the memory that you put in. Anybody actually get the paid version (or is this still in beta) -- sometimes the NOT Trial version works better.

npl Nikonian since 09th Mar 2004Wed 13-Sep-06 11:21 AMI think I found a bug (or at least an annoyance)in the Mac version of NX. When I save an image it does not remember the path that I previously used, even if I just saved another image. In Capture 4 the path is remembered. Not sure if this is true in Windows version but a friend has confirmed that it is so in his Mac version as well. As a consequence I use Capture 4 when I am quickly processing many images, and I use NX when I am taking my time with just a few.

I have been trying out nikon capture nx and would like some advice from some one "in the know".
- I have noticed that when I open an unedited nef file, some of the 'edit list' tabs are already ticked, and if I make a change say to the white balance and save the file (nef), when I re-open the file tabs other than just white balance are ticked. Why is this? is there some sort of auto setting.
- I have also noticed that the file size increases by a large amount even when a small edit is made, i.e. a 5Mb file becomes 6.5Mb after a single edit. My question here is, is it best to archive the original "raw" nef or the edited nef (this will take up a lot of space). (How large is an edited nef from a D80, (I am using a D70)).
many thanks for any replies

When you open an unedited NEF, the only "edits" that are active are the in-camera settings found in the Base Adjustments step. For example, if NR is turned on in your camera, the NR setting is applied there. You can have a Base Adjustment "checked" but the setting in that adjustment menu could theoretically be off (set to zero).
As a general rule, Edits performed OUTSIDE the Base Adjustments happen much quicker, as they are cached. The Base Adjustments step acts almost like a mini-version of NC4, which is slower.
The file size increase you see is in part to addtional edit steps, and in part to a much larger, high-quality JPEG preview that NX embeds in the NEF when it saves your file.
While the filesize increase is certainly not marginal, it is smaller to save an edited NEF as your master than a 16-bit RGB TIFF.

thanks for your reply.
I have a custom curve set up in my D70, so presumably this is causing some of the settings (tabs) to be ticked.
Agreed that a TIFF is larger than the edited NEFF. If I shoot in raw I save the raw files straight from the camera. Would you recommend saving the edited raw (after processing with capture NX) as well as or instead of the original. Maybe this is just a matter of space available to save.
Currently I save the original raw to a DVD, and save a oopy of my on-computer photos (all) to an external hard drive with exactly the same directory structure as they are held on my computer.

#83. "RE: Ideas for Capture NX Tips and Tricks FAQ" | In response to Reply # 82
Robert,
usually it should not be necessary to keep the original NEF files.
The edited NEF files can be set back to the original look (see Versions)
because all the original info is still there.
But there could be one case where you might need your original NEF file.
If there is a bug in Capture NX (and there are many bugs in this software),
the saved NEF file could get corrupted and cannot be re-opened.
In this case your NEF file is lost, and now you would need a backup of your original NEF (e.g. on DVD).
This happened never to me, but it could be possible.
So it is always a good idea to keep the original NEF on a DVD - it costs not much.

There is truly no comparison between Capture 4.0 and Capture NX. I am a former Capture 4.0 user who switched over to NX about two months ago. I use NX in conjunction with Photoshop CS2. Because of the added features with Capture NX, it is an invaluable part of my post-processing workflow.
It's not a substitute for Photoshop -- there are still things that NX can't do, or at least does not do as easily or as well as Photoshop. However the color control point feature (referred to as U-Point Technology) is in my view the next generation technology for photo editing.
Set forth below is a link to 4 video tutorials for Capture NX. I would start with Tutorial Movie 2 -- U-Point Technology Revealed. This tutorial demonstrates what, in my opinion, is the most useful tool of NX. The U-Point Technology alone justifies the software, IMHO. You can also download a manual for the software from this site. However, to download the software itself, you need to go to the following link:
http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=61
The editing really is as easy as it appears in the tutorials. The only downside in my view is that the software is somewhat slow, and there are some bugs with respect to batch processing.
I believe the software is still available for download as a 30-day trial. Give it a try.

Apparently 20 inch LCD monitors ( and larger ) are in a more "rectangular" then "square" shape. Does the shape of the monitor matter when one is doing post processing?
Another question: I know that Photoshop allows one to completely remove ( and add ) items from a given photograph. Does Capture NX allow the same editing function? Can one easily move an image from Capture NX to Photoshop so as to allow manipulation of that image in both programs?
Thanks for answering what must appear to be very silly questions.

robsb Nikonian since 23rd Aug 2006Thu 16-Nov-06 07:45 PMNEF Images edited and saved with Capture NX will appear in Adobe Photoshop CS2.
Use the "Open with..." option in Capture NX and it will convert the image into a lossless TIF for Photoshop CS2.
Opening the RAW image with Camera RAW will result in the original image appearing...without edits.

is it possible to enlarge the Levels&Curves palette (or the Histogram palette), in order to view the histogram more precisely ? I find it to small to be really usable at default size, but I can't find out how to have a bigger view, whereas it is obvious in Capture 4.
Thanks.

#93. "Nikon sRGB vs Adobe sRGB" | In response to Reply # 0
I recently printed a test shot at a booth as I have hundreds of shots to print and doing it at home will be too expensive and time consuming.
I did the test as I was not sure of what to expect from the Nikon sRGB colour. I did 3 prints. One was as PP'd in NX and defaulted as Nikon sRGB. One was the modified shot converted to Adobe sRGB and the last one was converted to Adobe sRGB at the begining and then PP'd.
Note:- I used sRGB for post processing as the prints are from a wide variety of cameras and mine was set to sRGB as I knew that there would be hundreds to PP and I tried to get them as close to print direct from the camera as possible. I prefer to shoot and PP in Adobe RGB and convert later if required.
The results were startling. The 2 Adobe sRGB prints were similar and had a narrow exposure range, higher contrast and shadow detail lost. The Nikon sRGB version was exactly as seen on screen.
Conclusion - for web and non-specific outside printing use Nikon sRGB and be happy!

As I was I was going through the book I was noticing certain things within NX.
First I have two monitors attached to my PC - not sure if this is part of the 'problem'.
I moved the Browser window to the second monitor. When I have the browser window open - I can double click a file/thumbnail or drop/drag the thumbnail over into the edit window and it will open for editing on my first monitor. When the file opens, the browser closes.
Is there a way to keep the browser open?

#95. "NX: Noise Reduction Unsharp Mask Workflow ??" | In response to Reply # 0
Do I have the Noise Reduction/Sharpening process down:
First, I have a D2H.
If I am NOT going to perform Noise Reduction, I just use Unsharp mask with the 66/5/4 settings.
If I am going to include Noise Reduction, I am going to perform the following:
1. Use noise reduction with an intensity setting between 10-20.
2. Then I perform Unsharp Mask with 5/50/10 settings.
The thing I need to confirm is that I am not performing an Unsharp Mask with 66/5/4 when I am performing Noise Reduction.
-
#96. "RE: NX: Noise Reduction Unsharp Mask Workflow ??" | In response to Reply # 95
walkerr Registered since 05th May 2002Sun 19-Nov-06 09:21 PMJason's book recommends skipping the 66/5/4 USM setting when using high ISO's and using a low intensity, high radius USM setting instead. If you do both, you'll end up with some ugly looking shots. Try playing with values between 5 and 10 for the first value and see what best suits your image.
Personal preference plays into the noise reduction settings as does the image itself. I tend to use pretty light NR values. That's because I would rather get good detail, even if there's a bit of noise. This is more important with a D2H as there are fewer pixels to go around.
Keep in mind that the alternate sharpening approach isn't just for situations where you apply noise reduction. It's probably even more important for higher ISO images where you choose not to apply noise reduction. Another alternative for situations like this is to increase the last value (the threshold) while holding the others relatively constant. That approach works well in situations where the ISO value is moderate (~400) rather than high.

I just discovered that you just select pics in the browser and right click and load settings and you have queued all of those photos. The just changed the names and file type and you are good to go.
For velvia type boost. I discovered you can do a gaussian blur filter and then in the opacity choose the overlay blening method and affect the LCH not all or RGB.

Hi Jeff,
the auto-adjust button in level/curves is not batchable,
but there is an extra step for this called "Auto Levels"
with a slider for contrast going from 0 to 100%.
I'm not sure how this really works.
100% is to much in all cases,
50% is sometimes like auto-adjust button, sometimes much more,
25% is good in most cases.
You should check the setting for black and white level and change it from 0,5% to 0,05% or 0,01% but maybe Auto-Levels is ignoring this setting.

1) Is the best way to go about workflow to edit RAW in NX first and convert to TIFF if I need to do any editing in PSE (rather than editing RAW in PSE)?
2) I used to use Capture 4.4’s batch program to batch convert RAW files to TIFF or JPEG without applying any settings but in NX it appears I need to apply some setting? Am I missing the way around that? Seems to me a big oversight if so (in addition to eliminating the multi image viewer which was much better than the browser in helping to figure out what pictures to eliminate straight away).
3) I shot mostly in AdobeRGB but occasionally in sRGB (III). I will likely be posting my photos online and having some commercially printed but may also print a few myself. With respect to NX’s the color management settings is it better to set it for AdobeRGB and then convert to sRGB? Is there a simple way to batch that? Also even when I set the color space for AdobeRGB and click to have that override the camera setting the sRGB photos still show up as III.
As you can see I need a NX class! I did buy Jason Odell's book but it has yet to arrive.

Instead of using the batch command, select the files you want to process in the broswer and then use File>Save As. You'll get a dialog similar to batch, but it will allow you to save as a TIFF or JPEG.
The next release of NX will allow you to do this using the batch command also.

I tend to shoot in Adobe RGB and print from that same color space. If most of your stuff is going to an sRGB destination, it may be easier just to stick with sRGB from the start.
You can batch photos in NX by creating a settings file for the conversion. Create an edit step by selecting Adjust>Color Profile, specify sRGB as the desired profile, and then save it as a settings file under the Batch command. You can then run it whenever you want, both for individual files as well as groups.

lawscreen Registered since 08th Nov 2005Wed 31-Jan-07 09:28 AMMy Intuos2 6X8 does not work with NX either. The pen really slows down when moving over an image on the screen to the point of being frustratingly slow thus un-usable and also does not respond properly with brush changes and pressure sensitivity. The Wacom tablet does however, work just fine with CS2 and the new beta version of CS3. I would like to use NX because I do like the control point technology but until this problem is fixed, I can't recommend the product for any Wacom tablet users. I gather that the Wacom problem should be addressed with the new NX version and that Nikon and NIK are actively working towards a solid fix (I sure hope so)! Arthur

That type of bit map modification is not something that NX was created to do. Think of NX as a RAW converter on steroids. It supports both global and local type correction and enhancement modifications, but does not support Photoshop type "cloning brush" manipulation.
I personally think that if NX could provide a simple "cloning brush" type tool it would be a killer app that would give Photoshop a run for the money. I do all of my color corrections/enhancements in NX and if the photo has some need for a cloning brush then I'm forced to export a TIF and bring it into PS for final touches.
If I had the choice I would love to stay entirely in NX (since I find it superior to PS in RAW conversion and color correction/enhancement), but for the kind of stuff you mentioned NX is not the right tool for that. The addition of a cloning brush would push NX from good to excellent. I can only wish.

Jeff

I am moving to a new PC that I am still building. I am looking for suggestions on how to lay out my files on multiple disks for optimal performance. I am presuming I need to consider file location at the physcial disk level and not at the lower partitioned disk level.
I have a WD Raptor 150gb 10KRPM which is paritioned into three disks:
C: OS and Application SW - NX is installed here.
D: other non photo stuff
E: working location - where I process images - I copy CF files to here and then PP them, I use:
YYYYMMDD_location name.orig (nef files)
YYYYMMDD_location name.work (pp'ed nef files)
YYYYMMDD_location name.jpg (jpegs of pp'ed nef files)
I have another physical disk where I store the above files when I have completed PP'ing. My NX temp and cache files are on this drive.
I have another physical disk where I store my backups.
Any thoughts?? I placed the cache/temp direcotry on the second physical disk as I heard you should move the cache/temp onto another desk.

Partitioning the same disk, is primarily for convience, as when you back up you can target partitions rather than the whole disk. If you really want good performance, you should put your page file on a separate disk and the scratch file to yet another drive. Another way to improve performance is with RAID configurations. Hard Drives are really cheap right now. I have seen 200 GB SATA 300 drives for less than $200. I just built a computer a few months ago. I was able to move some of my old drives to the machine and use them as I noted above, but I bought 2 500 GB Segate SATA 300 drives and run them in RAID 1. So I have a continous fail safe configuration as one drive mirrors the other. If I had configured them in RAID 0 I would a 1 T for my main drives. I sort of violate the common consensus and keep my programs and data files on the same drive, but many say it is better to have them on separate drives. But I have a separate drive for my page file, run another just for scratch and a third for Video files. All but the Page file drive are 120 to 200 GB ATA drives from my old system. The page file is a SCSI 30 GB drive partitioned as 2 15 GB drives. I use the other partition to store training files. Outside the computer I have set up some ATA drives as USB drives for backup, 1 80 GB, 2 500 GB. Using old drives allows you to put together a USB drive for about $20 for the powered enclosure. I use automatic backup SW to back up periodicaly to these drives, so I have full time back up with my RAID configuration, and the periodic backups for key files. Sort of belt and suspenders. I willeventually replace 2 of the internal ATA's with other SATA drives, as I want to install my old Sony DVD writer in the machine and I need an ATA port. I already have a Plextor SATA DVD and a Plextor Scsi CD writer installed.

I have a question. I went to the DSchool Basic and there the guy showed how you could free an objekt or rather change the background colour in a photo in Capture NX, he showed a picture of a flower with an ugly background wall, and with a mouse click he changed it to all white. Anyone know how he did it I've tried and obviously I've failed.

#127. "RE: Ideas for Capture NX Imporvements" | In response to Reply # 0
I find the software very unstable. Crashes are a regular occurence--especially when using crop and control points.
Speed is a major issue all around. I've read the posts on how to speed things up, but these are small imporvements which don't add up to much. Specific speed problems occur when using noise reduction, zomming in and out and saving to NEF format. It's horribly frustrating. Let me emphasize that this is very very very frustrating when you are trying to get work done quickly for a paying customer. The NX noise reduction is really good, but I often skip it because the speed is just unacceptable.
Also, when the software crashes, my recent custom saved settings files don't show up on the 'right-click' list and I can only get to them by browsing. Some type of custom setting management would be helpful.
I find the mouse response very 'sticky' when using NX. When working quickly, I often mis-click because of a mouse delay which can lead to a long wait for the software to process the mis-clicked command. Clicking in any curves dialog is a great example of this. I don't have this problem with any other software.
A larger curves chart would be very helpful so that you could more precisely manipulate your curve points.
I would also like to see a batch feature that simply applies auto levels instead of having to select static amounts that I apply to all images. I find the auto levels command works very well with 90%+ images and would like to apply 'auto' to a group of images.
One last little request....the ability to apply a text watermark to an image when saving to JPEG.
Wait...one more little thing...Having a favorites in the image browser or file folder dialog would be helpful like the one in Bridge. Ok.....that was the last one....
...no...it wasn't. It would also be really really cool, if I could take the NEF-processed files from NX and open them as NEFs in ACR instead of saving as a mega-huge TIF file that I can open in CS2.
OK...now I'm done. I promise.
You guys are great! I always look forward to your PodCasts!

I'm not surprised at the slow speed. The software must be filled with tons of applets that could slow response. It seems to me to be style over function.
That said , the images presented are crystal clear, sharp as a tack and slightly saturated (which I like).
After reading your analysis, I think I'll wait 'til next year to explore it again.

The feature you mentioned regarding a much larger curves/levels and histogram panel is present in that release as well as overall performance and stability enhancements. I can't say I see a problem with the mouse or overall delays, but that may be a platfrom difference. One suggestion on the noise profiles: stick with the "faster" setting as opposed to the "better quality" one. The differences in output are trivial and there is a significant difference in speed.

I always use capture NX for RAW processing but then I still need photoshop for the following functions:
- Healing brush
- PTLens plugin for correcting barrel distortion (Wave distortion is not an issue for me)
I like the fact that PT Lens corrects the distortion automaticaly.
If Capture NX had these functions I won't need PS at all. Especialy when Nik Color Efex filters are available in NX. About the barrel distortion, it must be verry easy to correct this automaticaly. Just buy the data from the PTLens guy.

Hello.
With my D200 i got a trial version of Capture NX, and even though I am not convinced I will use RAW processing I would like to try it out.
However, when installed, the product asks for name and company, and PRODUCT KEY ( in 5 boxes ).
Where do I find the product key ? I see nothing on the software itself....

Hi everyone. This may not be the correct place to post this sort of question, but this thread is very active with some good knowledgeable discussion.
I have read through the thread and have been given information from Rick and others iro NX.
I have used Photoshop for quite a few years and am now running the fully integrated Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, which as the name suggests runs seemlessly with Photoshop (I use CS2 still).
I have not tried NX extensively; actually barely at all. I tried the 30 day trial but rarely looked at it. I do however have quite extensive knowledge of Lightroom. I have recently looked at the official Nikon instructional videos and read about NX in the Nikon Professional User magazine.
My question is simple but perhaps not straightforward to answer.
What advantage/s does NX have over combination of Photoshop and Lightroom?
At the moment I can only see one, albeit an important one - cost!
Now as I have stated before, I have no allegiance to Adobe or Nikon. I simply want the best and most cost effective tool for my needs. Any RAW processor the type of NX/Lightroom/ACR, MUST integrate seemlessly with Photoshop (IMO) and this is very important to me.
So apart from cost does NX have any advantage over PS/LR combo?
Thanks in advance for what I am sure will be some very professional and informative answers.
BTW, the first person to convince me will empty my wallet of £100.00 plus the cost of Jasons NX Book!
However I think the moths hibernating in my wallet (saving for the D300?!!) will remain sleeping for now!
All the best.

JMontes Registered since 11th Jun 2007Tue 10-Jul-07 08:19 AMNick, I am far from an expert when it comes to these pieces of software, but I have all 3 (some are trials right now). You can indeed open files from NX straight into CS3 (and I would assume CS2). When I do it they open as a TIF file, not sure you can open it as anything else (I am very new to this).
The big selling point which pushed me to try NX was the following thread:
https://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=16777&forum=DCForumID36
I downloaded the trial of NX and tried this for myself. Sure enough, the RAW images opened in CS3 were pretty bland compared to how they looked in NX. It was really a night and day comparison when looking at them side by side. Because I didn't know how to use NX all that well I purchased Jason's guide (WELL worth the money) and now I'm going to end up purchasing NX. I feel it saves me a lot of PP time compared to what I would have to do in CS3 to make it match NX out of the box. I will still use CS3, probably moreso for portrait editing and things of that nature.
Again, I am no expert but from my "simple" perspective you can see where I'm coming from. Now if there were a guide like Jason's for Lightroom I'd like to see that. I'm on a trial on that as well but I'm just not sure I like it enough to spend the money on it. I'll need to play with it more.

RandyS Registered since 17th Aug 2006Tue 10-Jul-07 09:49 AMNick,
I have been a long-standing user of an Nikon Capture (and now use NX). About two years ago, I also purchased CS 2, ran simply because I felt that Capture simply was not robust enough to do more complex photo editing (masking, cloning, actions/scripts etc.).
However, I continue to use NX for all of my raw conversions. In my experience, the converter with CS 2 is simply not as good -- the colors are not as vibrant, and I believe the converter is more difficult to use. Furthermore, I found that certain tasks (particularly targeted color corrections, USM sharpening and exposure adjustments) are often easier to perform and yield better results using NX on the RAW file. To me, the color point feature of NX alone makes it worth the price of the purchase.
Because I should exclusively in RAW, NX continues to be a significant part of my workflow. In fact, if I'm simply editing family photos, I rarely go to the bother of using CS 2 -- more often than not, NX is much faster in yields better results. It is not, however, a replacement for CS 2.
Good luck!

Nick,
Here is my humble take on Capture NX. I have never been an advanced PS user and quite frankly, I find PS (i.e., CS2) a little intimidating. Even with some formal PS training, I still find myself frustrated when I can't figure out how to get my layer mask to work correctly. So I pull out my notes and relearn the right buttons to click, over and over again.
Then last year while on vacation I had several days to spend trying out NX. Within the first few hours I was able to do color corrections that would have taken me much much longer to do with PS. Then after reading Jason's book I became quite efficient in mastering NX. Now I only use PS to do cloaning type edits and use NX for everything else. Here is my list of pros and cons for NX:
PROS
I only work with NEF files (shoot RAW only...no RAW + JPG) and I want to manage only the single NEF original file. So with NX I can have multiple edits of the same NEF file (one with color corrections, one in B&W, one highly croped, one with Velvia saturation, etc.) and all embedded in a single NEF and all are non destructive edits.
I use iView catalog software to manage my entire collection and the iView previews will update as I change my NEF's and I can't comment on Lightroom, but for me iView is a blessing. I can't survive without it.
The NX processed NEF's are simply better than the ACR processed NEF's. Better color gaumet, better sharpness, brighter...they just look better than ACR.
Color points, color points, color points. This stuff works and works very very well. I can't over state this. Color points are the way of the future. With a few clicks I can make complex major adjustments that look fantastic and not artificial looking at all. Big time saver here. These masks can be extremely complex and all accomplished as intuitively as can be.
CONS
NX is a dog slow application. I don't know why it's so slow, but it is slow. I have a pretty beefed up PC and it still runs slower than I would like to see.
No cloaning type functionality. If you want to get rid of some distracting elements or modify the pixels, you have to use PS. If NX ever figures out how to add cloaning, I would drop my CS2/CS3 license in a heartbeat.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Jeff

Check Bridge\preferences\file\file type associations and see what NEF is set to.
Also open explorer\tools\folder options\file types and see what NEF is set to.
Only you can decide which software program you want NEF files to be opened by.

I've force myself to use Capture NX exclusively (a little over a month
now) and heres my list.
1) Don't Know about you MAC users but the interface is horrible on a Windows platform. Say what you like about the Windows OS but the GUI on all the applications that follow MS standards works! Nikon you missed the boat on this. (reminds me of Rawshooter great program, crappy interface)
2) I would like to somehow be able to tell if I had touch a NEF file
with capture. In a round about way you can if you see the Cache icon, but once you move the file to another location that gets removed.
3) Better : Give me a better mask ala magic wand in Photoshop
Give me a spot healer
Give me a stamp tool
4) Stop capture from terminating!!! This seems to happen after editing +10 Nef files. (I've seen all the work arounds so don't spam me)
This is making feel like I've wasted my $150.
5) The file browser does not follow MS standards, I can't delete, move file/folders with what you provide.
Don't get me wrong , I love what I can do when it works.

#142. "RE: Ideas for Capture NX Tips and Tricks FAQ" | In response to Reply # 141
Welcome first time poster,
I can comment on your items 2, 3 and 4.
#2--a capture processed NEF will identify itself through the file header tags. In other words, if using catalog software (like Lightroom or iView) you can easily identify any NEF's that have been processed by NX and sort on those.
#3--unforntunately there is no way to modify pixels in NX like using PS cloaning and healing brush type tools. You can do some minor fixing like removing small spots but NX is really a RAW converter for NEF's on steroids. As I have said before, if Nikon ever figures out how to bring that kind of functionality to NX, they will have a serious winner.
#4--NX is a memory hog and if loading up bunches of 6 or 10 Mpx NEF's it will bog down pretty fast even with a decent PC. I find that by doing my initial enhancements as a batch run (on several hundred NEF's) and then selectively doing my interactive enhancements on 3-6 NEF's at a time, will minimize NX from going crazy.
Even with these admitted issues, I find NX to produce superior results as compared to what I can do in CS2.
Regards,
Jeff

Got #2, but requires me looking at exif data.
I agreed with #3, goodbye everything else (well maybe LOL)
I actually went back to some old photo and re-did them in Capture NX ,
I thought I had nail them back then, but then capture WOWed me. Of cause this is after playing around with it a while and learning which adjustments go best with each other.
I bought 2gb worth of ram to try and alleviate some of the performance
issues. I like you have start using the batch mode to add adjustments.
I still think a program should not crash , this is not Beta anymore.
I sure hope if they come out with a new release it will be a free upgrade to existing users.
Im definitely not giving up yet!

I haven't experienced "NX crashes" much if at all as you describe...I don’t know what that could be...my problem has been that after I open several NEF's and start working on them, everything S L O W S D O W N until I lose my patience and close it down, reboot and then open it back up...certainly not optimal performance from anyone’s perspective...to say the least...but I have learned to find my limit of open NEF’s and have gained the needed patience that I some times lack (serenity now)...if it didn’t do such a bang up job on my NEF’s I wouldn’t tolerate the performance hit...hang in there!

Okay more items, or maybe a rehash...
1) Would like to have someway to tell what 'steps' I added/are in place
in a photo. This should be done without opening a file.
a) placing the cursor over an image gives the info
b) maybe have a view on the side with this.
Can't tell you how many times I thought I batched process some files and later wanted to tell where I left off.
2) Scripts! Scripts ala photoshop Extent Scripts. This would allow us to write our own functions. (Then I could do 1 above myself, or anything else)
I've think I need to re-work my work flow. I can't really recommend this product for processing a bunch of files. I find myself going back to photoshop to accomplish any sought of work on a whole set of files.
example "Copy images to another type (jpg etc) resize, etc".
"Time is money" and I seem to be doing alot of manual intervention which should be automated.
I'm getting close to dumping the product until it gets way better in it's interface.

goldberg96 Registered since 11th Feb 2007Sat 04-Aug-07 08:52 PMI kind of agree. I am trying very hard to love the product and there are certainly things I love about it (i.e. Control Points and the way it presents the initial image with camera setting applied).
But there are just basic manipulation issues. For one thing, if I set the folder pointer to a folder and then go to the browser, I want the folder pointer to stay where I set it until I change it. I don't want to have to select the folder again every time I open the application.
You can't use basic Windows shortcuts to open up pull down windows or to invoke items within those windows. I HATE having to use the mouse over and over to select pull down windows and items within those windows.
Although the product supports IPTC and will allow you to insert keywords, the process is very tedious, especially when you click OK and it takes minutes to get the IPTC data inserted into the files.
These are some of the things that really make this product less useful for me. And I agree with the previous post. It is hard to know what's updated and what is not. During your session there is an indicator for files that have been modified but close Capture and open it again and you don't know what you've changed and what you haven't changed. That's not friendly.
I am not a great photographer. I am in fact quite a beginner. However. I have been in IT for years for a major corporation that markets IT products to consumers. So although I don't know much about photography, I know a lot about what makes a product user friendly. I love some of the things I can do with Capture NX and would really like to make it the primary software in my workflow. But I am having a lot of trouble doing that because of basic flaws in how the interface works. Just maneuvering around the application is cumbersome.
Oh well, I saw this post about things that aren't liked about the product and thought I'd enter my two cents in case someone with any power to get these posts to Nikon might look at them.

I find Capture NX very easy to use. However, I still have to use Elements 5.0 to put my copywright on photos that I use as greeting cards. I process the photo in Capture and save it with changes as a jpeg or tiff. Then open it in Organizer, then in Editor and then put the copywright on. It would be nice to do everything in Capture.

#149. "Capture NX 1.2: adjust all, save once. Is it possible?" | In response to Reply # 0
So when I downloaded and upgraded to the new Capture Nx 1.2, I was completely surprised to find out how much better it was compared to the 1.1 version I had. It is much faster. The black line problem is gone. It crashed only once in my two-hour use (a record for my NX use.) In fact most of my serious complaints were fixed. Certainly I still hate the strange interface. (Sorry I am completely a Windows user. And NX looks like a low budget Windows software.) But I will make myself believe others like them.
Now comes to my real question. I normally process 100-300 RAW files at a time after a photo shoot. Let's walk through what I want to do:
1) I open an image and do some adjustment (say +0.5 stop exposure).
2) Then I find 40 other images under the same lighting will need the same adjustment, I want to batch apply the same adjustment to those 40 images.
3) Out of those 40 images, there might be 5 of them, I need other adjustment (say a red eye removal.)
4) Out of those 40 images, there might be 10 of them, I need another adjustment (say changing the white balance.)
This really sounds simple enough. With Capture 4.4.x, I can do all these adjustments without saving my changes to disk until the very end. Once I am ready, I save all files all at once. It may take 1/2 hour to finish the saving, but I go eat dinner during that time. The good old Capture 4.4.x... I did not find a way to do this with Capture NX!!! It appears Capture Nx has been designed to force you to work on and save one file to disk at a time. I figured out how to use batch to do step 2. But I have to wait (a long one) for NX to finish saving all 40 files to disk before I can make further changes in step 3 and 4. So goes my dinner break.
Can someone educate me a way to do this "adjust all, save once" kind of operation in NX?
Thanks!

goldberg96 Registered since 11th Feb 2007Fri 17-Aug-07 09:32 AMI am only a beginning user but it would seem to me that doing that would require that you can successfully open all 40 files at one time. I have a very beefed up computer and still I have not been able to even come close to opening that many files at one time in Capture NX. I have found from my own experiences that if I try to open more than 7 or 8 files at one time in that program, somewhere in the process they software will crash and I will lose everything before I have been able to get it saved. I hate when that happens. Because it won't always crash at open time. Sometimes it will open many files and then partway into doing lots of edits it will crash and all prior work will be lost. I don't know if anyone else has had better luck with that but in my opinion you would be better doing the large batch edit and saving the pics and then just doing the individual edits as separate batch runs.

stevefu Registered since 31st Dec 2006Fri 17-Aug-07 11:28 AMRob, thanks for the reply.
I agree it is unreasonable to expect NX to keep all 40 images opened. They take up too much computer memory and would slow down the computer to its knees. Even if it is possible, I don't think I want to do it: NX does not provide the simple option of "Save All". So you will have to save one at a time. Each save takes about 5-10 seconds on my machine. So I will be spending 3 to 7 minutes doing human monkey clicks waiting for it to finish. Another example where Nx does not have a design to support large number of file editing.
However on Capture 4.4.x, you don't have to open all files to apply an adjustment. Just multi-select all the files, and apply/load the needed adjustment settings. Capture 4.4.x will remember those adjustment setting changes without saving them onto disk. You can save the changes at the end. In Capture Nx, a batch dialogbox pops up to save the changes to disk. Until the saving is done, those changes are not applied. In my example, that implies I have to sit and wait 3 to 7 minutes before I can perform step 3-4. And I need many iterations of these to finish processing 300 images. What a great way to waste time in front of computer. That is a huge backward step from Capture 4.4.x to Nx.

And yet I was never able to keep NC from crashing after stepping on 20 or so images without saving, thereby loosing all edits.
Also in NX, if you want the fastest batch processing speed only use the functions in the Base Adjustment step. Of course you loose the capability, control, and power of the additional Steps.

I'm kind of new to this but I think CaptureNX offers two different solutions that could help. The first is to define a series of edit steps and save them in a "settings" file. You can then apply the whole set to any open file with "Batch|Load Settings". There is also batch processing which will apply settings to files dropped in a directory and optionally rename/move the resulting file.
A third option for simple adjustments (WB, color intensity) appears to be available in ViewNX and it's browser-like interface.
Sorry I couldn't provide more detail and I hope this helps.

My D80 has a couple of stuck pixels that show as white spots. Most of the time they don't matter, but sometimes they are visible enough to require a Colorize step. When you see them while editing the image they are easy enough to fix, but if you don't see them until much later after you are finished with the picture, it is a pain to have to go back and fix them.
I could of course send the camera to Nikon to get the stuck pixels mapped out. But stuck pixels seem to be generated over time. Since March when I bought my D80 two new stuck pixels have appeared in addition to the one that came with the camera. So I don't think that mapping out the stuck pixels is a solution that will last. Given time, new stuck pixels will probably pop up anyway. Capture NX should solve this problem by automatically repair them, like Photoshop does.

I don't think so, because the stuck pixels are white. The Dust Off procedure would probably not detect them as it uses a picture taken of a white surface.

Fair enough. I had read somewhere that an image sensor tries to correct white to grey and when you take the dustoff picture I assumed the sensor would differentiate the dust particles. Still it might be worth giving it a try. I would but don't have any stuck pixels (yet) to play with.
-
#158. "RE: Ideas for Capture NX Tips and Tricks FAQ" | In response to Reply # 157
I tried it and it doesn't seem to work, unfortunately. But I think it could be an idea to build on. For mapping out the stuck pixels one could take a picture with the lens cap on at a normal shutter speed where only the stuck pixels are visible and where noise is not noticeable. This would then be a kind of reverse Dust Off picture that Capture NX could use to map out the stuck pixels.

I took some images that were very similar. They showed in a folder with names from 100 to 121.
Edited some of them and gave them a new name, then moved them to another folder.
I then wanted to put the originals in the folder as well, but couldnt then remember which was which ! How do I see this ?
EDIT : never mind, Aaargh, looking at the time when taken of course...

I am not sure if this is going to be the thread for NX 1.1 questions/issues.
I found this 'enhancement' - how do I get it to work like 1.0.1? Check out:
http://mserfass.smugmug.com/photos/129673392-L.jpg
Do you see how the % amount is decreasing?
NX 1.1 is 'shrinking the images as it opens them - I opened 15 images, each subsequent image appeared smaller. 1.0.1 kept the same size image. Now I will have to enlarge them by hand.
Does anyone know how to force them to open in the same size?
Do you see the vertical black line about the 'R' in 'Rail' - this is introduced by 1.1 - I will have another post shortly - need to collect a couple more images.

This is my first time posting and I'm trying to find my way around this huge, but great, site.
I've got a D50, absolutely love it and have recently purchased Capture NX. I've also ordered Mr Odell's book.
However, no matter how hard I try I can't find the actual Capture NX FAQ, even if I follow the links that have been posted when people have already asked this question.
I'm under the impression that the forums have recently been moved, may this be something to do with it?
Anyway, if you could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.
Many thanks

Ah, that's good news in that I don't feel so much like a dunce being unable to find it.
Looking forward to my e-book arriving!

Because of its absence and the age and size of this thread, I'm going to "unanchor it". Jason's e-Book on NX contains these ideas and many more, by the way.Rick Walker

Photoshop ACR has the same issue, but you can change the "as shot" tag to "custom" without changing the temperature or tint and copy to any or all images.
