I can't comment on the d300/800/3/4, but I can say that the AWB v/s my old d80 is quite astonishing.

I never used AWB on the d80 as I found it unpredictable and far easier to leave as std daylight and then correct in post, however I've tried the D600 with indoor (sodium) and a variety of other situations (not flourescent yet) and it doesn't seem to miss a beat.

Quite chuffed about that as it seems like I'm now going to have (most times) one step less to worry about in post processing
