d610 autofocus point selection
If I go to rear screen view, I can move a focal point box around the screen with the AFl lock rocker switch(multi selector) but I cannot get the red focus point in the viewfinder to move using the rocker selector. I have tried to follow both the users manual and A 610 book by Douglas Klostermann. Both want me to hold the shutter release button half way down and use the rocker switch surrounding the af lock switch (set not to L)to move the red focal point. Only works to move any focal point on the rear screen but not on the viewfinder. Seems terribly clumsy to hold the shutter half way down while using the rocker switch with my right eye on the viewfinder so am I doing something wrong? In addition the red focal points in the viewfinder only flash for a second or two max so I cannot move it, just the black focus point box and move it only by repointing the camera not by using the rocker selector switch. Anybody near me have a 600 or 610 that I could come to see to get some direction. Not all that great but at least Ritz camera used to have stores and you could get some hands on help. I am in Irwin, just east of Pittsburgh, Pa.

If the D610 works like the other cameras, you don't need to hold down the shutter release; you just need to tap it to bring the camera out of stand-by mode so that the rest of the buttons work.
Being able to move the focus point is somewhat dependent on what "AF area" mode you are in. Single-point should always work. For the dynamic areas, you would need to NOT be in "auto-area".

I have tried to change from autofocus A to S by holding down the selector button and using the master dial but it stays AF-A in the top screen
(and the info screen )and does not change. I tried the menu but it seems to let me go for 11 or 39 not 1(one). Tap of the shutter does bring on the red focus marks but for only a fraction of a second.

I found clear instructions on the Nikon site.
There are instructions with pictures showing you the controls to use for the actions. Once I found the button adjacent to the side of the lens allowed me to change from area to point(AF a to AF s) the rocker switch worked just fine to move the point of focus. I thought the button only let you unlock the little switch to select m or af like the buttons on the release mode and mode dial buttons.
Now if only I could get up to speed with my editor and indexing programs😇 I need to learn enough about lightroom 5 and photoshop cc to decide whether or not to cancel my subscription for $10 a month and just buy lightroom (for the same price as the one year subscription, but have the program longterm) so far lightroom is importing both the jpg and nef files as jpg.
