I was using the infrared remote for the first time on my D600 and noticed that it does not work when the camera has timed out (stopped metering when idle). To activate, you have to go to camera to press shutter to activate metering. I have a wired one that I have never used (not sure I know where it is) and wondering if it behaves the same way. I was considering using it for wildlife snaps with physically being next to the camera.

Check out menu setting C5. It controls the standby time in the remote release mode used for the wireless remote. It is separate from the normal standby time set in C2. C5 can be set for 1, 5, 10 or 15 minutes.
When the C5 time expires, you have to wake the camera up with a half press of the shutter button. The wireless remote button won't wake the camera (at least not in my attempts).
