Well it has been a long time in the making, but I'm upgrading myself for Xmas. The CFO has approved the purchase of D610, SB-700 & 70-200 2.8 VRII. I've had my D80 since it's inception (2007ish) and have been really wanting a full frame for the low light capabilities.
While I do this as a hobby, I really enjoy sports photography and with the daughter in cheer and volleyball, it makes for some tough shooting conditions. I have learned a lot with the D80, so this should provide some further education and to further expand my hobby.
Unfortunately, they have to stay boxed up till Xmas morning, but it's hard with them sitting on the floor (not wrapped yet) just calling my name. Christmas morning is going to be exciting
Congratulations. I have a D600 and 70-200mm f2.8. It's an awesome combination, but a bit heavy. I bought a Black Rapid sling strap and now can shoot for long periods without getting tired. There are other brands, but a sling strap is a great stocking stuffer to yourself.

I say that the present needs to be first used on Christmas morning. To do that, one needs to practice with an completely unfamiliar camera, format, and shooting style. It seems to me that there's not enough time unless you start NOW. Merry Christmas, Tom
Congratulations on the package to be waiting under the tree. I shot my D600 and 70-200 VR1 this past weekend in a darkish church (1/80, f/4.0, iso 1600, 200mm, VR on, monopod) - a church I have shot with both D300 and D90 before - not particularly satisfying experiences, I might add. This Sunday's results may have been astounding to some but I have come to expect them from this camera. It deals pretty easily with light that was, at best, a struggle for the D90. At 100%, sure, there's some noisy texture but, with 24Mp, how often will you really need to do anything but downsample? Absolutely keep your heart meds around for your first view of high iso images.
I too have a D610 waiting for me not quite under the Christmas tree yet( still in the closet). I have had a little play.....1 outing but then put it away for Christmas. I am upgrading from a D 300 but bought the kit lens 24-85 as I do mostly travel and landscape photography. To help me survive until Christmas ( only 6 more sleeps) I bought Thom Hogan's ebook and have been reading that. It is not hands on but it sure ups the anticipation!!! The family are coming to my house for Christmas dinner.....I hope I have time to cook it!!!!
I cheated I bought my D610 a month ago along with a Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G, a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G and a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 HSM. Moved up from a D7100 and a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. The pictures are tremendous, you guys will be like little kids Xmas day! Happy holidays and enjoy!
You are going to love the D610. I too got the D610 for Christmlas, but not beingtoo religous I'm using it already. I have the 70-200 but the VRI version. Great lens but I hear the VRII is even better. I jumped up from the D90 and what a difference at low light. Enjoy my Nikonian friend.
