Mine was under a week though shipping times might differ depending how far you are from the service center. But they got mine on a Thursday and it shipped out Monday or Tuesday the following week, or something like that.

Maybe we got the D610 shutter mech! I never really compared the pre vs post service photos but if its taking better pictures its probably because you got lucky and the tech that performed the service on your camera made sure the tune up was right on.
I recently purchased a refurbished D600 from Adorama. When I opened the box (sealed and refurbished from Nikon) and checked the camera I noticed the LCD cover would not stay on the monitor. After taking a few shots (25-30) I did the spot test (small aperture against a blue sky) and noticed some small spots, a couple of large ones and a very small smear. (I understand that sensors get dust spots and need cleaning periodically but in view of all the discussion about this regarding the D600 I was somewhat sensitive). I called Adorama and they recommended that I contact Nikon, since they simply reship the refurbished units they get from Nikon.
I called Nikon Service. Got a representative right away. Very courteous. Suggested I send the camera in for repair. Emailed me all the instructions. The camera went to the Los Angles Repair Facility.
I live in Wisconsin. Sent it in Nov 5. Nikon Received it Nov 8. Nikon sent it back Nov 18. Received it Nov 22.
The repair was exactly as you experienced and was covered by warranty. They replaced the LCD cover. They replaced the shutter mechanism, adjusted the auto focus operation, checked the bayonet mount, cleaned the image sensor, and did a general check and clean.
The moment I received the camera I decided to do the dust spot test ( not surprisingl It was pristine at 1:1 viewing. Smear and spots gone. Cover fits like a glove (like it is supposed to.) The EXIF reports 1377 shutter releases when I received the camera back. I have taken less than 100 shots - so far so good - maybe too early to tell.
BOTTOM LINE: I am very pleased with Nikon's Service. They treated me very well. I am extremely happy with my D600.
