Yes, do remove this and install the plastic cover that came withh the camera when you shoot without having your eye at the view finder. Now! Note that the entire assembly comes off -- both the plastic and the rubber as one piece. Don't try to pull the rubber portion off from the plastic as I tried to do! Just get your thumb nails under the plastic part and slide the assembly straight up. (If there's a wrong way to do it, I'll find it -- even if it takes great effort.)

The funny part was you should have seem me running thru settings trying to figure out what I did wrong then realizing hey it works when I don't have it to my eye, then the DUH hits me my hat brim was blocking it.
