There may be some sort of coupling issue with the 500mm AFS II with AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E-II. The camera- just got it- doesn't want to focus. It is not even hunting. But the camera & 500mm with no 1.4X does fine. Took it to my knowledgable camera store (Hunts in Manchester, NH) & we tried a new 1.4X. Same problem. So we tried a different D600 body. Same problem. Then we tried the 1.4X on a D800 & it worked fine. Even tried it on a D3200. Fine. It also works fine on my D3s. Seems that there might be a firmware issue with the D600 & this particular lens with the 1.4X? Has anyone who owns a 500mm AFSII (non-VR) & 1.4X encountered this problem or know of it? Manual says the TC-14E-II & lens are compatible. HELP!
I just had the same problem a few days ago while shooting BIF (eagles). The problem was intermittant though - about 15-25% of the time. No hunting and no focus. At the time I ascribed it to perhaps the matrix metering. I was using the latest 500 f/4 VR. I have not seen this problem ever before while using the same lens/TC combination with my D300.
Yes, no hunting & no focus. Like it goes dead. The problem is intermittant although lately it seems more continous. Never was a problem with my D300. Was a problem with D7000. Both the D7000 & D600 share same AFs hardware.I really am coming to believe it's a firmware issue re. the 500mm AFS II. Not sure how I get this fixed?
Here are my responses to your questions which were much appreciated:
I really only use the center AF sensor. Typically use AF-C but we tried it in AF-S & no difference. Didn't try Live View but will check it out. No difference whether close to or far off correct focus. Tried helping it by manual focusing but no impact.
An f/4 lens with a TC-14 has a maximum aperture of f/5.6, not "over f/5.6". I don't think this is the problem here, especially since we've been told that the lens with TC focuses successfullly on other camera bodies.
Well a warning to all owners of the Nikon 500mm AFS II lens. It appears that the D600 will not focus the lens when used with either a 1.4X or 1.7X extender. I went to Hunts Photo Video both in Manchester, NH & their main store in Melrose, MA. We have now tried 3 different D600 bodies with the lens plus extender combo. Same result- no focus. Not even trying. No extender at all works fine on the body. So it ain't the lens. We then tried a new 1.4X & a 1.7X with my lens & the different D600 bodies & same result. So it ain't the extender either. Combo works fine on my D3s body & the store's D800 bodies. CONCLUSION: NIKON is claiming compatibility of my lens & it is not there. For D7000 owners I believe you will have a similar problem. I tried out a D7000 with the lens + extender & got no focus. Note: both bodies have the same AFS system. I did call a tech rep at Nikon & they have no way of confirming/denying the issue since they do not have a 500mm AFS II on hand.
Bottomline: Sadly I returned the body for full refund to Hunts who should be commended for their excellent service on this.
