I noted in the D600 specs at Nikon USA under GPS that it listed: GP-1 and GP-1A. I went to the Nikon accessory page and in addition to the GP-1 there is now a GP-1A listed as "New" but the Nikon page only lists the D600 under "Compatible with".
Does anyone know if the GP-1A is in fact specific for the D600 or is it a full refresh of the GP-1?

That has very much been the main complaint with the original GP-1. Many reviews say it is slow to lock and doesn't at all in environments like wooded areas.
I ended up with the Solmeta Pro2. The GPS part works great. I got the Pro2 over the N3 because the Pro2 has its own battery. However, the Pro2 needs to have a disconnectable cable at the unit in order to charge the internal battery. I've already destroyed the connector once and it often gets knocked out. The N3 has no internal battery but the connection to the unit is permanent.

A much more cheaper alternative is the Opteka GPS for only 40$. Maybe not the same functions and not the same quality as a Solmeta or a Nikon but I'm not sure.
But I have not tested this one myself and I have only read about it.
