Last Saturday during a wedding shoot, my SD card died, as I always shoot with 2 cards it was no problem, however as I had no warning or error messages from my camera (D600) I wondered if any members had similar problems. I will use recovery software to ensure that I have everything, however to date my computers do not recognize the drive...... Suggestions please! Thanks George
Memory cards can go bad just like hard drives do: sectors go bad and electronics go bad.
Using a card reader, recovery software can help get data off the card if it is a problem of bad sectors.
If the problem is in the electronics, professional data recovery services will be needed (not cheap).
Two of my older Lexar cards developed bad sectors. Lexar replaced one card under their lifetime warranty. For the bad 2 gig card, I just deep formatted it to find the bad sectors and set the card aside for things like sensor dust pictures.

Joseph Thanks for the reply, normally when a drive or memory starts to go bad at least you have some sort of warning, this is the first time that I have had a card just die on me after many years of digital photography. I suppose I must put it down to "SD happens" perhaps the answer is to have a good second drive and pray that the 2nd drive keeps going!
Marty Yes I always format the card in the camera, I do this every time I pull data off the card after every shoot. However this time it was neither corrupted data or missing files, but the drive itself simply died. Since posting this message I have managed to get my Mac to recognize the drive by using a USB plug in card reader as it is recognized as a drive and the data on the SD card data within the recognized drive.
Just for clarification, both the internal drive in your Mac AND the SD card died, and that at the same time? You worked around this by using an external card reader which you connected to the Mac and you were able to recover the data from the SD card.
Let us know how it went.
