I am pretty sure 3xxxxxx models are for North America which I have seen serial numbers up to 18,000. Mine is 30078xx so it appears that between the major sales markets there are about 50,000-60,000 out in hands of photographers world wide. Stan St Petersburg Russia
This is absolutely plausible. You can also count an other way around. They produce every month 25'000, so since mars we have a production of around 3 month, that makes 75'000. Pierre Nikonians of Switzerland

The 8 in 800XXXX is a region code. I believe 8 is for asia/australia. US is 300XXXX. The remaining digits I think is the number of cameras off the production line for that region. I do not believe there is a code for D800 vs D800E (ie. there can be two 8000456, one for D800 and the other for D800E).
mine is 60115xx. bought in sweden april 30th. is there any
correlation to the focus issues and serial numbers?? why are
they not recalling the cameras if there are so many issues?

In looking at several of my Nikon camera bodies here in Canada the serials all begin with a 5, i.e. 5000007. I would assume the first number conveys where it was bought and thus 5's indicate a Nikon Canada camera.
This makes perfect sense because a camera bought in the U.S.A. is not covered by Nikon Canada's warranty policy, only cameras bought in Canada are. In terms of business this model is to protect Nikon Canada and it's vendors. Otherwise customers would simply purchase cameras from around the world and where they may save a buck or two in a "duty free havens" such as The Rock of Gibraltar. Nikon's business in Canada would thus disappear. I think this is perfectly legitimate and also protects us users from "clones" and "fake" Nikon cameras that you might find in the Asian internet market place.
My D800 has been perfect up until now and after 8 weeks of very hard work; my hard drives on the other hand are getting a real workout _______________________________
EDIT: based on the above we can conclude that serials work as follows and convey which aspect of Nikon's Global Network is shipping the camera into their respective marketplace.
2 = Japan 3 = USA 5 = Canada 6 = Europa 8 = Australia, New Zealand? _______________________________
