nikon d800e and Leica lenses
I came across that Leitax website where they offer replacement mounts to use Leica lenses on Nikon cameras.
I am wondering whether such a lens might be useful on a d800e; does anyone have experiences?
Or, do Leitz lenses really have an edge over Nikon lenses? I can't find any decent independent reviews about them in the net.

Lloyd Chambers owns Leica lenses that have been converted to a Nikon/Canon mount. He can be contacted here.

My experience with Leica R lenses point to 2 superlative lenses: the 100mm f2.8 macro and the latest 180mm f2.8 Asph Elmarit. Another couple have equivalent reputation, but I have not tried them: very latest 50mm f1.4 'lux, latest 90mm f2 asph and a 280mm (not sure of max stop anymore).
Anyway the 2 I mentioned are brilliant, and I heard only good things about Leitax transformation. I regret not owning them anymore.
Now, the real truth is that Leica R lenses are a bit quirky to use for Nikonians, as focus ring and aperture ring turn in exactly the opposite directions to Nikon conventions. It is really confusing.
Also while the build is magnificent, the weight is very high and adds up to the back pain.
Finally, beyond the handful of exceptional lenses listed above, performance is objectively not better than Nikkor AI equivalents, and sometimes worse.
For those who do not already own a legacy of R lenses, and want a similar highly engineered manual experience, the current Cosina/Zeiss ZF2 range offers a nice collection of gems, properly tuned to digital Nikon requirements.

Thank you for this answer. I have further looked around in the meanwhile, and it seems to me that the Leica R lenses are in general somewhat overpriced. I have looked at the leitax website, and I might consider geting a replacement mount once I find a lens which suits me at a reasonable rate.
Any thoughts about 135mm? Are they better than a Nikon 135 2.8 AI - for that is what I might try to pik up otherwise, they are very reasonably rated on the used market.
I wouldn't know what to do with a 180mm, let alone a 280mm, far too long for me.

The 135mm R lens is nothing special. That is why they are relatively affordable (but objectively overpriced, as opposed to the handful I mentioned which might be worth their weight in gold...). No better than Nikkor AI equivalent, but heavier, if I remember well. Quite a few others in that category of un-memorable Leica R lenses (24mm, 100mm f4, most of the sigma based zooms, first gen 19mm, first gen 50mm 'lux, the sigma based zooms, etc).
