D800 in hands and second store called!
So, I got my D800 about a week ago (got a call from a store while being away and had to wait for a week to get back to town - thanks to the store for keeping the camera for me). Today I got a phone call from a second store with a message that they have a camera for me if I still want it. Originally they were my first choice but charged me full deposit and then told me that I am in a third hundred of people waiting, which didn't please me at all. Then I found a different store where I was #1 in queue, but that store is just starting to develop a camera department, so they were not getting the camera for a while.
Wish there was anyone I know who needed the camera now! And I live I Calgary, Canada.

This is what I will most likely do. No reason to get a camera I don't need (and it's not like it costs 10 bucks!) and definitely someone else will be happy to get the camera.
It was just funny how it all worked out. And also shows that Canadian stores finally started to get some stock of this camera - last time I checked at this second store about D800, which was about 3 weeks ago, they told me that they received less than 15 of them so far. Considering that they should have fulfilled preorders by those with deposits first, it looks like they've got big shipments of D800s.

I can empathize with your story about paying a deposit only to discover there's a long line in front. That's what happened to me at one dealer. Like you, I plunked down the full purchase price thinking it would get me a camera quicker. (I won't mention the store, but it wasn't any of the prominent NYC-based camera stores or Amazon.com.) Well, after 6 weeks of waiting, I canceled the order and found a D800 at another store the same day.
Congrats on your D800!
