I've heard a few negative comments on long exposure shots, so did a bit of experimentation. This was taken with the D800 at f16, 20 second exposure, noise reduction on in camera (not no significant noise reduction done in post), ISO 200. The idea was to get a long exposure, not to make up for low light.

I was pleasantly surprised. In the full resolution shot I can't find any weird artifacts that have been complained of, it's smooth and nice. There's no visible banding or gradiant from amplifier noise (noting I did have the dark frame turned on in the camera).

Incidentally, this was camera metered in "A" mode. I put in a quarter stop in post to brighten the flares, but it pretty much nailed a 20 second exposure.

By the way, it was done with the 14-24 lens resting on an upside down plate, no tripod. Just casually laid the camera down and hit the shutter button every once in a while looking for good combination of people movement, while eating pizza.

Anyone interested in the full resolution can find it here (I don't know how to put in a URL without it displaying it, so am munging it a bit, so copy/paste and put in the two periods missing):
