I have an old AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G lens (2nd edition) that has never been very sharp on any of my DX cameras.

Well, on my D800 this lens is amazingly sharp. Not quite up to prime lens standard, but much better than I've ever seen it perform on a DX like my D300S.

I never expected this! I think the extreme resolution of the sensor simply adds to the capability of this otherwise mediocre lens. I think everyone needs to retry some of their older lenses when their D800s arrive. You may be in for a surprise!

My old late 1970s manual focus AI Nikkor 35mm f/2, 105mm f/2.5, and 200mm f/4 are so sharp that it is dangerous to look at the image. Even my old AF 24mm f/2.8D lens is shining more brightly than EVER before.

All those pixels have improved my old lenses performance, not worsened it. The D800 is a magic camera. I'm not kidding you! This camera is the most incredible flipping camera I've ever held in my hands in over 42 years of photography.

There, I said it!

UPDATE: April 4, 2012

I decided to do a little test. I set my nice new D800 up on a tripod and shot a picture across the room with a Sigma 80-200mm zoom lens at f/8 and 200mm. I bought this Sigma in 1982 at a camera shop for $45. It is a single-coated cheapest of all zooms, poor boy special (don't laugh, I was raising kids 30 years ago). I didn't even set this lens up in my camera's non-CPU lens data area so IPTC data reports it as a 105mm. However, the lens on the D800 is what took the picture. Let's have some fun!

Here is the setup:

Here is the image my cheap lens took on the D800, with the area in red marked for the cutout:

Here is the cutout at 100%. I did minor post processing on it, as follows:

+15 contrast
+5 highlight protection
+5 shadow protection
+14 saturation
+25 sharpening with a 1 pixel radius

I think it looks okay for a $45 lens on a $3000 camera. What do you think?
