In another thread there is mention of the D800 grip aiding the frame rate. Does anyone know if this is true and what the grip-improved FPS rate? If it is doubled like with the D700, I can accept the high price. If it does not increase the frame rate, it's not worth it to me.
Even though the $500 price is below Nikon's MSRP of $616, it's not unusual for B&H to show a high price before product introduction. My guess there will be a drop in price or there will be a lot of 3rd party copies for a third of that price.
The Nikon USA website lists it for $616.00! I was shocked when I saw this. Well, there is a good argument that the D800 is somewhat under priced so I guess Nikon wants us to buy into the system and then hammer us with the accessories. Fair enough, although I'll probably just get the body for now and possibly wait a while before I get a grip that gives you only a 50% increase in frames per second. I understand that the new EN-EL15 does not provide a long battery life like the older models so using the grip with the EN-EL18 is a big consideration if you travel outdoors to remote locations.
BTW, the MB-D12 only comes with the MS-D12 and MS-D12EN battery holders, no batteries included. Plus if you want to use the EN-EL18 Lithium Ion battery you'll still need the BL-5 Battery Chamber at $33.50. I'm feeling a little poor already.

I also believe the D800 is under priced. I am not sure that Nikon will try to exploit the market on accessories or make up for lost profit, however, they wouldn't be the first manufacturer to implement the strategy.
The shocker for me was in the pre-order. I am in Canada and pre-ordered the D800 on the first day of availability from a retailer that I have purchased
D50, D200, D300, D700, (all with grips),
AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR II, AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED, AF-S DX 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED, AF 50mm f/1.8D, AF-24-70mm f/2.8
The next day pre-ordered the MB-D12 same retailer List in Canada is 429.00. Never thought to look at other retailers. See my previous post in this thread. The other chain is taking pre-orders for $399.00 for the grip, and D800 body is the same.
So I found out what value to Henry's was worth $30.00! Apparently they do not price match on pre-orders. So I cancelled my order for the grip and D800. Their response was no problem your ordered has been cancelled.
Pre-ordered with a new retailer (probably lost any chance of getting my body any time soon), however, I cannot for the life of me understand why any retailer would lose any customer for $30.00?
I think it was around $450 at Adorama when I begrudgingly ordered it. I know that there will be third party grips, but from my experience, in comparison to the Nikon grips, frankly there is no comparison. In fact, there are even some 3rd party grips for the D300/700 that look OEM and will damage your camera.
If the real Nikon fits and is as solid as the MB-D10, while I'm not happy to pay $450, I'm going to accept it as "you get what you pay for."
I agree, I have had aftermarket grips in the past and while they didn't damage any of Nikon's, they were definitely not as solid as the "OE". It would appear that the MB-D12 will follow up the MB-d10 and provide similar form, function and quality. Albeit at a cost!
Just a quick note to say thank you to Henrys web division. They reviewed my history and "made it right".
