I have a pre-order with Amazon, placed on 3/23. They have a ship date of between 4/13 and 5/30. I want to get a D800 at some point, but not as early as 4/13, so I'm thinking of canceling my order. I need to replenish my bank account.
So I'd like to hear from those of you who have ordered from Amazon and received a camera. When did you place your order and when did you receive your camera?
I Amazon.com expected date is from 4/16-6/5. I'm really not expecting it to come until maybe late July or August. I don't really know for sure, but I do know that when I pre-ordered my D7000 and they gave me an expected date, I didn't receive my camera until about a couple of months after. It's just as well. I have to catch up on my post processing and replenish the funds a little as well. Plus it gives me a chance to read up on other user's posts and see what settings/problems/etc. come up.
I don't think you will be getting it around 4/13, but you never know I guess.
Thanks for the replies. I see a lot of traffic about B&H delivery uncertainties as well. But both of your replies leads me to believe I would receive my D800 later rather than sooner, which is what I want. We have a trip to Yellowstone planned for late September and that's really when I would like it. But I cancel and then re order who knows where I would be in the queue. (I realize that agonizing over all this is a real luxury and am grateful I have the means to even consider it.) Thanks again for the responses.
I wonder how accurate the estimates are for any company taking pre-orders. I would have expected many to pre-order from B&H, Adorama, Amazon, etc., and then when one company ships cancelling the other.
I placed my order back on March 28 or so, still have a 4/23 - 5/30 estimate.
I ordered from Amazon back on March 10th. Ordered camera, grip, battery, charger. Got the battery right away, the charger two weeks later, grip arrivedBaapril 12th. Camera SAYS will ship between April 13th and April 30th.
Have not had an update so MAYBE camera will ship next week.

Consider yourself fortunate. I placed my order on April 1st (April Fool Day). My decision was between the D800 and D800 E. I choose the D800 after reading reviews on Nikonians. Thus far Amazon has not even provided me with a "window" or timeframe when the camera may arrive. At this point, I will be content to receive the camera before June 15th.
If I do not receive any further notification from Amazon by May 15th then I will look at other options to purchase the D800. I sincerely believe that Amazon has minimal control over their D800 allocation... same for B & H. Good luck.
After Amazon had my initial estimated delivery of 3/23 and that date came and went, they changed my estimated delivery date to April 13 – April 30. Last night they sent an email that they do not have an estimated delivery date and will send an email when they do. My birthday is in June so it might end up being a birthday present.
>I haven't received an update from Amazon yet (late March >order), but my local Best Buy shows available. Ordered and >paid, now waiting for the pick-up message. > >Fingers-crossed, the availability is now >"unavailable" so hoping I'm the one with the D800! >Weighing the tax and affiliate credit vs. the camera -- going >for the camera.
I should have crossed my fingers sooner. Not available for pickup. Best Buy customer support said it could have already been purchased by someone in the store or in someone else's checkout process.
They said the order would auto-cancel in 7 days, but if any new stock comes into that store, I'd get a chance at it.
Pre-ordered on Feb 7th at 12:30am Central. The day after the "Still want it? We'll keep on trying. .." email I received a "We now have delivery date(s) " notice. Shipped yesterday and it's out for delivery today.
Has anybody who had a delivery date window from Amazon that has now passed got a new delivery window? My window "expired" on May 3rd and now shows the.. " We'll notify you via e-mail when we have an estimated delivery date for this item" message.
FYI, I ordered at 10.05am MT on Feb 7th!

I had the same message on my amazon order until today. However, this morning it changed to an estimated delivery date of May 9. No range this time, but a specific date. Hooray! Hopefully I will have my D800 next week. I ordered on February 7, around 9 pm.
After reading how people who ordered it the first day of availability from Amazon are finally getting it (3 months later), I decided to do what I initially intended to do. I went to my local dealer and put a deposit down. I only ordered it from Amazon six weeks ago and I'm willing to wait to a certain extent, but I figured that I would like to have my camera some time this year. My local camera shop received two D800s last week and two this week. I still have my Amazon order. I'm number twelve on the list at my local dealer, and something tells me that I'll get the camera from them before I get it from Amazon.
I went with Amazon because I wanted to save $300 from sales tax. I will now always go with my local camera shop for everything that I want that is in demand. I did with the Nikon 85mm 1.8G and I got it during the first week it was released. Having said this, it would have been nice to save $300. There's still a chance.
