So I ordered my D800 the morning following the announcement. I ordered from B&H because of no tax and they usually get a good allocation of new product. After the deliveries started and I realized the B&H was not getting many cameras to deliver.
I saw so many responses here on Nikonians that they were walking into their local BestBuy and walking out with a camera, I did the same thing. I'm in SoCal and went to the largest store in my area and spoke to the photo department manager. They got two and I missed the last one by 30 min. He said that they would be getting regular small shipments and he could order me one and I'd get it within a couple weeks. Last week I got a call from this department manager telling me that a bunch of D800's just hit their warehouse and mine would be at the store on Saturday.
So if any of you are tired of waiting for a D800 from B&H, Adorama, or Amazon - go into your local Best Buy and talk to the photo department manager (who know the special order procedures) and order one.
I did the same thing in Chicago. It came in over the weekend but I could not pick it up until yesterday morning. The manager said they had people offering hundreds in cash to "lose" my order. Lucky they are honest people at the Chicago Best Buy.
I got mine from best buy also. What I did was talk with one of the clerks in the photo dept. and he said he would let me know when they were to come in. So I got a call last Thursday and went in and he was able to process the purchase but the delivery wasn't to be there until Friday evening. I checked with them at 6:00 pm and the truck was there but needed to be unloaded. They even went back to see if they could find it but those that were unloading the truck said I would have to wait. I went back at about 9: 15 and they found it for me. The interesting thing was that on Saturday morn I had an email from them telling me my order would cancelled and they would refund my money. That was the last I heard of that. Sorry for being so long winded. http://www.ronbakerphotos.com
I will pick my D800 up tomorrow from Best Buy in Folsom, CA.
5 weeks ago I was in Best Buy and inquired about the D800. I was offered the opportunity to order it and get it within 5 days. I chose not to do that, as I already had an order in a large camera store.
I kicked myself my 4 weeks--when I saw the notice on Facebook from Nikon Rumors that Best Buy might have D800s to order--I did it.
Impressed with the knowledge of merchandise that is on hand and available. Do think Best Buy has an edge as they didn't take pre-orders.
Kudos to Nikonians for sharing information across the globe so folks can get their hands on a D800!
I preordered in B&H the morning the D800 was announced. After hearing stories from Nikon Rumors, I went to the store near my home on March 24. The customer support told me that they would have one within a week. I got a call the next weekend to come by and pick it up. I guess this camera has been a problem for B&H (too many NPS members, maybe).
Dang, I can't find any love at Best Buy. I checked at 2 in NC and at 2 in VA. They look at me like I'm from the moon and say "let me check the computer". Then it's we don't stock that, only the bigger stores and we'll only get that with a kit lens.
After much searching around and agonizing over who to order from, I finally walked into Best Buy on 4/24. I was told they had 34 in the warehouse, I could order one and they would have it in the store for me to pick up the following Tuesday 5/1. I paid for it and had an email confirmation of the order before I left the store. Two days later I received an email saying the Camera was on special order and that I would be notified when it arrived. Bottom line was I didn't get the camera on the first. I made some calls got several different answers. Then I got a call from my in store CS Rep and he apologized for the inconvenience and told me my camera should be in Friday the 5/4. My fingers, toes, and eyes are crossed hoping for the best.
I called my local Best Buy and they stated they could take my order, and have a D800 brought in from one of their main warehouses - would take approximately 5 days.
They are not stocking them at the stores, only bringing them in from the warehouse with an order. Unfortunately, I'm waiting on a D800E from B&H which Best Buy does not have set up as an SKU in their system. Sounds like this is the place to go for the D800 but not if you want an E. I also spoke with Wolf Camera who said they are not planning on carrying the E which I thought was odd.
I received a notice from Nowinstock.net on April 25th based on a request I left on the site the day before. Per the notice, I immediately called Best Buy, went into the store and order one with expedited shipping. It arrived two days later on 4/27. I am a silver Reward Zone customer and got overnight shipping for .17 (really!)
Also: Kudo's to Murphy Camera in Kentucky. I was on their waiting list for about two weeks. They called me today to tell me they had a D800 for me. I quickly called her back, thanked her (Kim, was the salesperson), and released the D800 to the next lucky person in line.
Good service (and great sales people) at Best Buy. Good follow-up at Murphy's.
