I received an email from AAFES late last night updating my order status. As of April 10th Nikon USA is telling them that the next "backorder release" will be April 15th and my D800 should ship "shortly after that date". They did not clarify if "shortly" is a matter of a couple of days or relative to tectonic plate movement. Hopefully I am about a week away.
Thanks Akers! Based upon our e-mail conversation I cancelled my pre order with an online dealer and ordered from AAFES. My projected ship date is 23 April! I am not holding my breath but that is much more comforting that the online retailer even refusing to tell me where I was at on their "list."
Just a while ago I logged to AAFES and the ship mid month notice was removed from the D800 description. So I ordered one and in the ordering process it was noted - expect ship time within 14 days and allow 7 days delivery time. Plus free shipping! We'll see.
I just thought after I saw your post - how many active duty military or military retirees are going to be ordering something of this nature. It's got to be a whole lot shorter waiting line than B&H, Adorama or Amazon! And after checking a few items, they carry a lot better selection than NEXCOM and many of the prices are better. Go figure.
My friendly local camera store (Lakeshore Camera, Palm Harbor, FL) received 2x D800 and 1x D4 today - all accounted for. Fortunately I was one of the lucky recipients and now have my D800.
It took about three weeks from point of order. I opted to pay in advance, as I felt that this would help the store by not requiring them to commit as much of their credit to the order. I think that it's worth developing a relationship with local specialists rather than buying from a general electronics store or an Internet retailer, so I was happy to take the chance that they would get a quick turnaround and so I didn't hedge my bets elsewhere. The store manager said that he felt that Nikon were more responsive to their orders (than perhaps some other retailers) because they had confirmed purchases. I don't know for certain if prepayment helped or if the store just has a great relationship with their Nikon rep, but I'm certainly pleased by how long it took under present circumstances, and was very happy with the service that I got from the store.
The camera is a fair bit different from my D90. I have some learning to do.
