External HD Connection

When going on vacation one needs to transfer pix data from your D800 to an external HD. USB hard drives are relatively inexpensive (less than $100) however they do not contain any firmware to transfer data. Apparently the D800 doesn't have this firmware either. Hard drives that do have firmware and that can be powered from a wall outlet are quite expensive. I've seen them as high as $500. So the question is how can one transfer a days worth of picture data onto a USB hard drive? I do not want to take a laptop device to perform this function as carrying the D800 already enough to lug around :) Outside of buying a lot of flash or SD memory cards what are the recommended solutions to perform this task? USB drives typically can hold 500 Gigabytes of data....
