Any comments on Transcend 16 GB CF cards, I really want SanDisk but where I live you can buy a D800 or any Canon but you cant get a SanDisk. The local Nikon shops are selling PNY which I don't want and Transcend. Can send abroad but I want a card this week for my new D800. Don't need video speeds, more interested in reliability. Thanks
I've heard some comments about card failure, but that can happen to any card.
I would be careful about the Transcend 16 GB SD cards. There was a problem with some batches of those SD cards and they were being replaced by Transcend at no charge. They are probably out of the market now, but I don't know all the details.
The 16 GB cards are not very big for the D800 files.
Until recently I used several Sandisk 8GB CF cards and some 16 and 32 GB SD cards that I originally bought for my D700. Those worked well in my D800 but I got tired of all the swapping during a photo shoot and started looking for larger CF cards. I was skeptical but bought a Pixelflash 533x-Pro 64 GB CF card from Amazon. Cost was around $90 delivered. Others had used them successfully but the consensus was that they should be formatted first on a computer and then in the camera body. I did that and then tried it on some non-critical shooting. Two weeks later it is working great and I sure enjoy having the extra storage. Now I need one or two more for backup...
I'm not sure what your needs are, but based on what I have read, the Komputerbay cards are not worth the risk. There are far too many reports of issues with different cameras, card readers, etc. And due to the large size, if they are corrupt you lose a much larger number of images.
I'm sure there are some people that are happy with the cards. But I would stay away.
I could see using it as a backup card. You could write your NEF files to a pair of SD cards and write a copy to the single large card. That would reduce the risk. I'd be sure you have a compatible card reader and fully test the card by filling it with images before you use it (run 2000 RAW + JPEG large using interval mode). I saw one report that problems only showed up after 32 GB of images so I would fill the card to test it.
