I want to buy a card reader for my D800 files. I note that all the good readers are USB 3.0 and my current computer only has USB 2.0. Am I correct in assuming that I could use the 3.0 card reader plugged into a 2.0 USB port? I am aware that I would not get the speed of USB 3.0 but then my present cards are only 60MB/s. I will probably be upgrading computer in the not to distant future so if I can use the 3.0 reader in a 2.0 port I will get the good reader. If not I will just get a cheap 2.0 reader for use until I get a new computer.
Doug, Another thing you can do if huge D800 uploads are too slow with USB 2: You can buy a card to put in your computer that will give you USB 3 ports on it. The cards are quite inexpensive and they work well.

Russ, unfortunately that is not possible on my imac.
I can recommend one brand to stay away from ... Phottix. I bought their alleged usb 3 reader, and got appalling speeds out of it. Tried it on 3 different pcs and two different brands of card, same ultra slow result.
Trouble is it was so cheap ($20) that it wasn't worth the effort in returning it.
So, stick with a brand that specialises in memory appliances would be my advice.

Haven't used the Lexar unit, but I'm using the Transcend USB 3.0 and it's working great for me even though my computers are all USB 2. But I bought the USB 3.0 unit for the day I get the next computer and get 3.0 built-in. Both the Lexar and the Transcend are rated 4.3 out of 5 on Amazon so they're both highly rated by users.

Thanks everyone for the input. I ordered the Lexar USB 3.0. I presently have only USB 2.0 but hope to upgrade soon. My present computer struggles with all the software I have coupled with D800 files. Getting a lot of freeze-ups.
