I had a problem with my Tamron 90 macro when using LiveView on my D800. It chattered and acted erratic. Worked fine on my D90. I sold the Tammy and got the Nikon 105VR. Not all third party lenses are necessarily compatible with Nikon bodies and it's up to the third parties to make firmware changes to their lenses. I just didn't want to deal with that and wanted a 105VR anyway. Hope it works out for you.

I have only one Tamron lens, the 70-200 f2.8. I don't believe I had ever tried live view with it until your post. Live view works normally with the lens on my D800 and does not work at all on my D700. Also, the Tamron works well with a 1.4X Kenko TC Teleplus Pro 300, but it will not work at all with my Nikon 1.7X TC17EII. The Tamron lens is very sharp, focuses quickly and quietly and costs almost $1K less than the Nikon version, but I guess you pay a price in compatibility if you buy a non-Nikon lens.
