This is strange. If I focus via viewfinder, it works. If I focus via Live View - No Go

Any combination of my D700 or D800 with either of my Tamron 28-75 or 28-300 lenses.

I shot two videos with my iPhone to show what is happening.

Here is my D800 and two shots with the 28-300 lens.

The first shot is using the viewfinder to focus. Shooting on a tripod, VC off, and using a shutter release with the Mirror Up option for stability.

The second is using live view. The focus moves a little sometimes, but usually nothing.

Sometimes it gets close, with the green box and dot, then goes red. Has never done it right in all my testing. Both Tamron lenses. My Nikon 24-70 works fine, and my Sigma 12-24 works fine.

Anyone have any reasoning behind this? Looks like most of the time the lens focus is not even trying.
