I am baffled.... Is there a simple detailed set of setting to have the flash on my D800 trigger my SB-900 hand held off camera? I know it's a set of Masters/Remote, Channels, etc. I have read the Nikon Manual, Thom Hogan's explantion is better but I am still baffled. Can anyone please direct me to a simple step by step layout of setting so my D800 can control my SB-900 without cables and hand held. Thanks to all. This is a magnificent source! As always, please have a Great Day!
What Mick has written here will set set it up correctly for remote wireless control regardless of any previous settings on either device. Once the groups and channels are set up correctly the first time, you should not need to change them again.
When you are done, if you don't change these settings they will be retained for next time you use remote wireless flash control. However, the next time you use flash : 1) should you wish to use the built-in flash on its own : use custom setting e3 to change from Commander mode back to TTL or Manual 2) should you wish to use your SB900 on the camera with control via the hotshoe, you need to do 1) above AND change the SB900 mode from Remote back to your choice of TTL, M or AA.
On the D800, you have the choice of using the built-in flash to supplement the remote flash (in which case you select TTL or M for the built-in mode as explained above by Mick) or not. If you do not want to use built-in flash to supplement the remote unit then set the built-in flash to "--" as explained above but note that you still have to raise it and it may still emit a pre-flash to meter the scene but it will not flash when the actual exposure is made.
All info below excellent..but, just remember, with CLS system on Nikon, it must be line of sight for the flash to work; therefore, if the SB900 is inside an umbrella or out of sight...it might not fire properly.
I personally like the Pocket Wizard system...it's a few $$$ but, works as described and allows you full control with the AC3 controller on the top of the camera.
