Haven't taken any serious photos yet just feeling it out with some test shots. So far so good.

I am curious about the DX crop. I tried some DX lenses but could not see any grayed out area, either in the View finder or Live View. Manual says must have 5a off, which I did, but still no grayed out area. Manual seems to indicate that one can see the area which will be cropped. What am I missing?

The metadata shows the same or close to it for a photo shot with an fx lens or dx lens.
For example --while shooting raw 14 bit lossless compressed ---

Tokina 12 X 24 dx lens - File 42.5 mb - size 7360 x 4912 fx
Nikon 70 x 200 fx lens - File 38.6 mb - size 7360 x 4912 fx

I understand that a dx crop gets you about 15 mp. How does one determine how many mp in a photo? Just curious.

I did find that my RRS L Plate off the D300 fits on the D800.
