I have the Manfrotto RC2 quick release plates for both my tripod and monopod and they work well but would like to get a L bracket that works with the RC2 QR that won't block any of the doors on my new D800. So far I have had no luck. If I switch to RRS, it will cost me approximately $900 to fit the tripod and monopod. Does anyone know of a L bracket that will work with the Manfrotto RC2 QR but not block any of the D800 doors? Thanks.
I do not know exact specs but what you should look for is to replace Manfrotto RC2 quick release system to Arca Swiss type quick release system. So at first, you will change the tripod quick release system to Arca swiss. Kirk has the conversion system and I am sure any other does. Secondly, you will get Arca swiss style L-braclet for D800. I use one by Kirk but RRS has too.
Agreed. I too previously used RC2 ballhead/gripheads. Liked them a lot, until i experienced a nice L Bracket (have had both the Kirk and RRS (d300 and d800 respectively)). Both L brackets are QUALITY - i'd pick whichever is cheaper/easier/faster-to-get. Can't really go wrong.

Thanks. I pretty much decided to just replace both ballheads (tripod & monopod) with either Kirk or RRS ballheads, quick release clamps and L bracket. Price-wise both products are fairly close. Any recommendations for which is the better product?
i beat the snot out of the L Bracket on my D300 and it still looks great (Kirk). A few rub marks and chips, but great/tough finish.
I just bought the RRS L Bracket for my D800 and it's been fine so far. I liked the laser etching for sensor alignment on both, and think the RRS had a slightly better ergo shape to the bracket itself around the Grip battery door and easier access to adjust the standoff distance for routing cables when Portrait. From what i recall...
I really don't think you can go wrong between these two. Going totally off-brand w/ something out of china would be a different story (though likely very serviceable).
As for ballheads - i looked at both RRS and Kirk BH's - both look awesome and were a huge upgrade over previous BH. I found a resounding thumbs up from folks here for the Markins BH's - especially their load capacity vs physical weight of the BH itself.

I have a Manfrotto 322 RC2 grip action ballhead. It uses the quick a release plate which I have on my telephoto lens foot. I have a Kirk L bracket, Arca swiss, on my D800 and a Kirk specialty clamp that has the Manfrotto quick release plate on the bottom that can use the Arca swiss L bracket on top. Here is a link:
