I'm curious why this doesn't work. It's my understanding that when I specify multiple exposures, the camera effectively reduces the light recorded for each (gain), so that when they are combined into a single image, the exposure is "correct." In other words, if I say I will take two exposures, each one records half of the light. If I say I will take eight exposures, then 1/8 of the light is recorded with each actuation.

So, I reasoned, I can increase the exposure by three stops if I take seven of the eight multiple exposures with the lens cap on. This would allow me to take a long exposure without a 3 stop ND filter.

What I got looks like a highly solarized image.

I'm not surprised that this did not work, but I'm curious if there's a not too technical technical explanation.

(The first image below is a baseline shot at 1/30 sec. at f/5.6.
The second image is two exposures, one at 1/15 sec. at f/5.6 and the other with the lens cap on.
The third image is eight exposures, one at 1/4 sec. at f/5.6 and the other seven with the lens cap on.
