Shouldn't the D800 be a step up from the D300s?

I've been shooting a D300s for a few years now. I came to that camera from a D200, D100 and D70. When I started researching the D800 I thought wow, this is the camera. Full frame sensor, upgraded focus and electronics. This was the camera for me. I saw the warnings about having the right glass (I have several but my favorite and perhaps the best is the 24-120 F4 which I think is pretty good). I took the camera to Disney and Israel and when I returned and review the images I thought they were good but not great and definitely not amazingly sharper, more colorful and detailed vs my D300s.

Next I did a shootout and shot the same photos with the same lens with both cameras. I shot some in P mode just to give both cameras an equal shot as choosing the settings and I also shot some in manual where I was in full control of everything. Quite to my surprise, other than file sizes the photos from both cameras were very close and both me and a friend actually selected images from the D300s as out favorite for some shots.

My only conclusion is that when you get to such hugh end equipment the differences are less apparent. What do you think, do you agree or an I definitely doing something wrong?
