I've been using the new AFS 80-400mm VR with my D800E for birds in flight. I was experimenting today with 3d tracking. It worked just fine when I used the f/5.6 lens without a teleextender, but as soon as I added my TC 1.4E II teleextender, I couldn't set focus for 3d. (The lens and telextender yield a maximum aperture of f/8.)

I mounted the teleextender to my f/4 600mm VR, yielding a maximum aperture of f/5.6 and I was able to set focus for 3d.

I've searched the literature but found nothing about this. Is anyone able to set 3d focus above f/5.6 or is there something wrong with a piece of my equipment?
