After depressing the AE-L button I thought it would lock so I could recompose w/ that meter setting. This goes more to movie recording, as I want to set an exposure and lock it so that the camera does not continually change the exposure settings. How do I use the AE-L button to lock exposure either in photo or movie mode?

You need to keep the AE-L pressed to lock exposure. Also: If On is selected for Custom Setting c1 (Shutter-release button AE-L), exposure will lock when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Gorji ------------- Please visit my galleries: Reza Gorji Photography
Hi Gorji, That is what I am finding out- This seems rather strange that it cannot be locked w/ out holding down either the AE-L or the Focus release w/ C1 set to on. Damn- my fingers will get tired....
I don't have a D800 to check, but other Nikon DSLR's have a "AE Lock Hold" option for the AE-L/AF/L button. Using this option, you press the button once and exposure is locked until the button is pressed again or the meter times out.
