hi I have just got my hands on my d800e I was very happy took some shots and when I have had a look at them in lr5 they look very noisy and not as sharp as people are saying I tried f1.4 2.8 11, to see the difference and in low light lots of light etc but still look as if they were taken at iso 1000, am I missing something?
For ISO 1000, try using a sharpening setting of 35, 1.2, 20, 50 with NR set to about 10. In order to get the best sharpness out of the D800 or D800e, you don't want to use the default sharpening values. Similarly, you need to apply some noise reduction once you get to around ISO 400. You'll be happier with the results if you do these things.
Sorry - that was a typo of mine. I figured out that you meant ISO 400 and the settings I provided were for it. Yes, you definitely need to change the default settings. If you just leave them at their default values, you won't get good results at any ISO. I've reset my default sharpening for my D800e to be 40, 0.7, 35, 10, and that works well at ISO 100 and 200. As the ISO increases, I alter the sharpening values and start adding in noise reduction.
I'm not precisely sure what your other comments mean, but as you increase ISO, noise will go up, so you need to apply noise reduction in Lightroom. That same noise can reduce the apparent sharpness of an image. Sharpening is closely related to noise reduction (it's pretty much its opposite). I'm at a loss on your last question regarding "what is under in the menu...".
