I have and use an MC-20 on my D800 and it works fine. Well, at least as far as a shutter release goes. I have not tested out the timer mode functions as I have not felt the need to replace a dead battery for the MC-20 yet.
Without a battery, the MC-20 has successfully operated the shutter release in almost all of the D800's release modes: S, CL, CH, Self-timer and Mup (I've not had need for the Quiet shutter-release mode with the MC-20 and therefore have not tested it).
Also, I frequently use the MC-20 successfully (without a battery) with bracketing while using CH, Self-timer or Mup modes.
One thing I'm missing is the ability to lock the shutter open while using the Bulb mode on the camera (alleviates the need for me to continually hold the button down to keep the shutter open for a long exposure). I could use the MC-20's or D800's timer functions to do this, but I've noticed that some remotes have a mechanical switch that allows the remote's shutter button to lock open (which to me would be more convenient than having to set a timer each time). And, there's that pesky dead battery issue again.
Hope that helps,
