I purchased the waist level finder (dr5) but have been unable to remove the standard eyepiece. It is more than finger tight and I do not want to force it off with any tool. Is there a lock or some release that must be activated?
I purchased a diopter eyepiece and had the same problem. I closed the viewfinder shutter and still couldn't get the stock eyepiece to unscrew. I ended up tearing the rubber off the the stock eyepiece which did the trick.
I may be reading too much into the post by sdemirjian, but the rubber doesn't have to be destroyed in the process of taking it off. I have removed/replaced mine quite a few times. I too have the right-angle finder and I have made it a habit, when screwing the normal eyepiece back on, to barely tighten it. (I do the same with the magnifying eyepiece.) The lever that locks it in place will keep it from unscrewing. I've not lost one yet.

I just bought my D800 last night. After a day of shooting and the pressing buttons, changing settings and all that fun stuff I tried to remove the viewfinder piece.
After trying numerous times (with the shutter closed) I gave up and asked my wife if she could do it (just two minutes ago). Instantly she handed the camera back to me and said "there you go", she got it off! I figured out what I was doing wrong and I suspect most other people are doing wrong...pressing too hard.
Very little pressure is needed to remove it, just don't push in while turning counter-clockwise.
Thank you all. With your combined help, the eyepiece is out.
I had completely missed the page 36 viewfinder shutter/lock release requirement the first time around. After releasing it, I was still unable to unscrew the eyepiece until I realized I was pushing on it while turning. Without pushing, the piece unscrewed easily.
