Now we are all settled down and satisfied more or less with D800/E and my big unresolved issue is what should be my second body to have or keep. Besides dual FX/DX capability of D800/E, I found that we still need to carry two cameras with attached lenses to not to miss a good shot. Any suggestion for a versatile solution? Wait for D400 if one could wait?
It'd be nice to be able to catch a fast fleeting moment with double digit FPS speed. Another D800 will basically force me to give up on that for a little while. In the mean time I am keeping D300 with grip.
If that's what you're looking for, then what about the D700? Better low light performance than the D300 and similar form factor and controls to the D300/D800. There's no guarantee a 24+ megapixel D400 would have the frame rate you seek.
Are you really looking for a backup body or a second body to compliment the D800. I have the D800 / D300s combination as I can't afford exotic long lenses for the D800 and at my age I couldn't carry them around even if I could afford them. I use the D300s for anything that would require 300m or more on the D800, everything else gets done with the D800.

I am sure something like D400 will come out eventually but I think 1 year from now if Nikon is on 3 year cycle. As of right now D400 is vaporware. But here is another thought for you. BTW I am in the same situation. Do you really need D400? Are you really taking pictures of far away subjects that you need that extra pixel reach, assuming D400 is 24mp? Will it be a clean camera? I have Canon 7D but getting no better quality with exact same lens (Sigma 50-500mm OS) than from D800 because 7D is very noisy even at ISO 100. Do you think current 24mp censor is cleaner than 16mp crop from D800? All of these you would have to consider otherwise it would be just a waste of pixels.
A great question. I was thinking of getting a D600; But I'm thinking that there possibly be a D4H or D800s in a year. I played with the D600 and was really impressed by its performance. ------------- Please visit my galleries: Reza Gorji Photography
If you buy a D600 as a backup and you use all of the D800 controls as intended, you will be frustrated with the difference in controls. I bought two D800e bodies so I do not have to think about the difference in controls when I switch bodies. No lost shots fumbling for buttons that are not there.
My backup for my D800e is a D4. For occasions that the D4 is more appropriate the D800e is the backup. These two cameras complement each other fantastically. The controls and menus are very similar. I always thought that I would eventually get one FX camera and use my D300 as a backup. Now I think that using a FX and DX camera together could be confusing, even if controls and menus are similar. I much prefer the 2 FX solution.
After saying that I would choose the rumored D400 over a D600 to back up my D800e. The change in controls and menus going to the D600 would be worse than FX vs. DX. I have a D90 to back up my D300 and I always was a bit slow changing settings on the D90.
I realize that economically my pair is not possible for a lot of you. It normally would not have been possible for me either, but I inherited a decent amount of money this spring. I put some of it toward my new and probably last cameras. Thanks Mom!

I have two bodies of D800E and I use both for all assignments. It is so much easier to have the same functions rather than 2 different bodies; in addition, it acts as a backup camera. Do we call this back up or second bodies???
