According to Nikon Rumors, "Nikon is close to sending a repair advisory about the D800 left focusing issue. It is a quick fix in the repair center but they are monitoring the amount of cases reported through the European Support Office. Well worth contacting Nikon if your camera has this problem. There have been plenty of reports already sent to the support center, but they have to hit a certain percentage of the total bodies produced in order for Nikon to announce a repair advisory."

Even if a D800 repair advisory is not as imminent as Nikon Rumors is reporting (They are usually right about these things.) it is well worth it to report the problem to Nikon, even if you are unprepared to send the camera back to them at the immediate moment for whatever reason. The more often the problem is reported by those encountering it, the more likely Nikon will change its policy about the repair. Hopefully in the future they will provide a priority turn around and pay for 2-way shipping. That could happen if Nikon puts out an advisory.
