I have always believed in the orthodoxy that to photographic moving water and achieve that milky effect, you absolutely MUST have your camera on a tripod or everything around it will be blurred.

Today, in Franconia Notch, on a drizzly day, I walked into the woods carrying my D800 with the 24-120/f4 mounted and no tripod. Then I came upon several nice scenes of small waterfalls and flowing over rocks. So, what the heck, I moved the f-stop to 1/8 or 1/15 and shot away, handholding the camera. Not expecting great shots, I was somewhat surprised to look in the view finder and find them to be pretty good.

I am actually amazed how good these photos turned out. Take a look here: http://lmmillerphotography.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Franconia-Notch/24453758_fFTZCs. I don't know whether it is the greatness of the camera or the lens, but these amaze me.

I spent the past week shooting in Maine and for the most part relied on the same combination (http://lmmillerphotography.smugmug.com/Travel/Maine-2012/24395358_N7x3RP#!i=1988806087&k=9kJLgCD). Not bad, I think, for an amateur with a walk-around lens. Remember all those warning about his camera and needing a tripod, etc.? Maybe this camera is actually the amateurs dream because of what you can do with moderate skills.
