Clean at startup & shutdown
Hi all, My D800 arrived yesterday morning, and since it's pretty similar to my D3, and before that to my D2X, as of this morning I've finished setting everything up, shot some astonishing shots, and pretty much mastered the thing.
But it has one baffling menu item that's just about driven me nuts. I'd like to set up the camera to do a supersonic sensor cleaning at shutdown, but when I go into "Clean at startup/shutdown," I'm faced with three choices: "Clean at startup," which has the word "ON" to the left of it, "Clean at shutdown," which has the word "OFF" to the left of it, and "Clean at startup & shutdown," which has the words "ON/OFF" to the left of it. The only three states I seem to be able to set by pushing the "OK" button or the right side of the multi-selector are "ON", "OFF," or "ON/OFF." No matter which of these three states the entry line in the "Clean Image Sensor" screen shows, when I go into the setup screen "Clean at startup" always appears to be ON, "Clean at shutdown" always appears to be OFF, and "Clean at startup & shutdown" always appears to be ON/OFF. There's no way to tell what the state really is.
I've seen Nikon do some weird stuff, but this one tops my list.
Oh, by the way, no left-side focus problem on this one.

I think that those on, off and on/off are only symbols for state where cleaning happens.
Item which you select with OK button is selected, and there is indication of status when cleaning happens if you lookat menu:
clean at start up/shutdown on/off
clean at start up/shutdown on
clean at start up/shutdown off
so "on" is startup up, "off" is shutdown...
not so easy to notice.

Pertti has it corret
What you are seeing is similar for all Nikons with the sensor cleaning function. Selecting "ON" tells the camera to clean when you turn it on, selecting "OFF" tells it to clean when you turn it off, and "ON/OFF" tells it to clean when you turn in on and when you turn it off. So, you need to choose "OFF" to achiebve what you want.
Pages 394-400 in the D800 manual explain this pretty well.

Thanks, both of you. You're right, Brian. I was depending on Hogan's book, which doesn't explain that very well. Yes, the manual makes it clear. Strange, I've been reading the PDF manual for a month and I never caught that.
I'm off and running.
