The D800 is the third Nikon dSLR I've owned and the first one that I'm not bonding with - yet. A key reason is my observation/perception that the matrix and center-weighted meters are unusually sensitive to contrasting dark and bright areas of a scene. This has made it difficult for me to nail exposure, especially in instances when there is little or no time to do extra-careful metering, such as candid street photography or candid portraits. Thus my confidence that the D800 will obtain the images I see is not as high as I'd like.

In his excellent guide to the D800, Thom Hogan goes into a lot of detail about how the matrix meter, especially, really works and the sensitivities to be aware of, such as the placement of the focus sensor in the scene and its interaction with the metering system.

I had the D300 prior to the D800 and I found proper exposures much easier to obtain. I wonder whether anyone here has had similar experiences or has some thoughts about the D800 meter.
